Nutrtion noobs

Humble

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or when people/family/friends talk about food or nutrtion in regards to their weight or w.e they have no idea what they are talking about and believe in the most stupidist shit that it just does my head in so much.

For example have a sister that thinks eating dietry fat is the devil and makes you fat.

Boils her chicken so it removes the fat so she dont get fat.

Avoids pasta/rice/potatos because their carbs but eats vegetables and fruit.

Goes to the gym for 2 days. Doesnt do legs because her legs are too big........................ (They toothpicks)

I could go on and on...

Hi Humble no you are quite right generally people know very little about nutrition and about what their body needs in general.

They know even less about excercise and what their bodies need to keep healthy.

And so they listen to whatever the tabloid headlines provides them.

I struggle with this a lot.

I guess not everyone is really interested in knowing the difference between media sensationalism, marketing and what we know as concrete about the body and food. They are okay with reading the headlines, or ads that pop up on the internet, thinking its the truth and leaving it there. Or listening to that "big guy" at the gym and believing everything he says (no carbs after 6 or something oldschool).

The worst part is that even though they might find it ok to be like that and havent put any effort into learning about nutrition they will still have an opinions on it as if they know all they need to - they can put food in their mouth and gain or lose weight, what more is there? A lot of trainers or even competetors can "know" how to cut out carbs or cut calories so tthey/heir clients lose weight - but that doesnt actually mean they know what that is doing to the body and why.

Question everything you are told. Most things you will hear from any person, tabloid, or even nutritionist are going to be "out of date". Hormones like Leptin and ghrelin have only been discovered in the last 10 years that are complete game changers with things and are being studied all the time. Theres always more to learn and find out from recent research. theres heaps that goes on in all sorts of fields with advances in genetics techniques and the information we can get from mapping transcriptomes that will almost never be touched on in any youtube bodybuidling video you could watch. yes your favourite bodybuilder might not know about it but it doesnt mean that its not effecting them or that the knowledge is useless.

The draw back is you have to actually be interested, learn and do it yourself.

But, of course its totally fine to not care or want to do that - yes you can lose and gain weight, gain muscle, but you probably wont know very much about nutrition.

Yeah good point Dinah and yeah OP fucks me off when people who dont even lift think their top shit and talk bs about nutrition and training even though theive never done it before. Like I had a friend who said 'when r u gonna cut bro? you NEED to do cardio, it's the ONLY way to lose weight"

Then I have this annorexic girl that heard me discussing the Idea of using steroids later in life, and she says "why cant you just do it all naturally" and I was like because its not possible and she was like "but if you do it naturally its more of a challenge that way"

Like wtf Im not even trying to ''challenge myself'' I just want to get big.

The same girl saw me working in the weights room in PE and I was dumbell pressing with half reps and she was like "try touch thetop, its harder that way" and shit like that.

But yeah I say leave those people to their own devices I guess. After all their common folk and were bodybuilders so we would carry out things differently from them.

For example if a normal person wants to lose weight they might start going for a run every day. We on the other hand may do a keto diet or carb cycling etc. :)

Azide, my friend, you are mistaken. This was those kind half reps that you are supposed to do, like that constant tession thing ie I wasnt locking them out. But yeah they were decent reps of peace Smile

how many kg? and yeah i guessed it would be that kind. tbh i think youre better off doing full reps..Im still using my chest at the top of DB bench..its not like using a bar where your hand spacing is fixed and youre hardly using chest on the top part of the excercise. sure you use triceps too, but IMO thats a good thing

pretty lucky to have access to freeweights in PE lol.. we had running and swimming with a bit more running

@op yeah that ticks me right off... do we have the same sister? lol.. it's like they'll read the tiniest bit into something and make their mind up with strong opinions about everything.. only listening to what suits them.  i learn just to act obvlivious to these kind of people as if i dont even know what theyre tlaking about and if they ever lure me in to those conversations ill counter troll by suggesting something like the atkins diet which will make them leave me alone. you know what they say, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"

@leeroid

mm what? I never said she said or I said she shouldnt eat vege/fruit.

She doesn't realise that the cals in fruit and vege mostly come from carbs over pro/fat. When the point of her not touching pasta for example is to elimate the carbs.

But you said she is stupid because she is eating something that contains carbs (fruit and vegetables) while avoiding other carb products. So basically you're saying that if someone is on a no carb diet they should completely eliminate fruit and vegetables from their diet and not consume one milligram of carbohydrate. Or they're a nutrition noob.

I didn't cut out vegetables when cutting out carbs precontest. I knew vegetables contained carbs but only trace amounts. I didn't have fruit though.

Only reason I brought this up is because you've got this in your original post as something stupid to do. A friend was on a no carb diet and she had cut out vegetables and fruit completely from her diet. So she had no source of micronutrients or fibre. I was concerned as it was supposed to be a long term thing and encouraged her to add vegetables back in to stay healthy.

I think what he means, rather than saying that if people cut carbs they should cut fruit too, is that quite commonly people will be "scared" of carbs like pasta, rice, potato and try and eliminate them but then they'll end up eating 4-5 serves (if not more) of fruit a day, or more, totalling over 100g of carbs, when they don't realise that they are consuming way more carbs from fruit (for less satiety as well) than they are or even were from the carbs that they fear. 4-5 servings of fruit you could eat a damn lot of potato (serval hundred grams). But because they see fruit as somehow "better" than those other carbs they think it is better for them and is helping them lose weight or avoid weight gain - which ofcourse is unfounded.

The mass public are easily lead astray by mass media. They think is got to be true, it's in print. There is a saying "you lead a horse to water, but you cannot make drink".

In other words you show all the data on nutrition and training methods, it's up to the individual if they believe it or not.
