PLEASE HELP. How harmful is pacific island food on the body?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I'm a newbie here and have joined so I can get some information regarding foods from people who actually know what they are talking about. I enjoy meat called "POVI MASIMA" You buy it from Mad Butcher for $20 a pack or in a bucket for $35. In the bucket it comes soaked in red liquid that I know nothing about... It's salty and when cooked the fatty bits are  yellowish. You just boil the meat up and add cabbage to cook....It has a lot of fat on the meat. TOTTALY LOVE IT!!!  ESP THAT SALTY TASTE :) Now, how damaging can it be on my health? If I train regularly is it fine to eat often? How much can I eat? Pic of the dish with cabbage....

Tom

One type of food is not healthy or un-healthy. It depends what foods you are eating all the other times as well and also overall calories and macros.

Thank you so much for the reply Dinahlady :) Well I guess I eat healthy.....

breaky -bowel of cereal, two pieces of toast, snack -banana, lunch -2 sandwiches, snack -banana

dinner -meat, rice and veges

I was told that povi masima is really bad on the health so Im trying to figure out how much and often I can eat before health risks because I totally love it and want to keep eating it but also concerned about my health. I'm new to all of this so I will need to leran and understad how calories and macros work. Thanks again Dinahlady

Povi masima is another name for corned beef. And I agree - it's yummy, especially the warm, salty, fatty bits!

Unfortunately, it is high in salt and high in fat. In fact, it's about 20% fat, and slightly less than 20% protein. If you want to see how calories and macros work, check out our newbies guide here: http://www.gymnation.co.nz/newbies (it looks a bit messy right now, but all the info is there).

So yeah... Povi masima is certainly not great for you, but it's not so bad that you can never have it. Treat it like you would McDonalds. Maybe once a week?

(Also, welcome to Gymnation, Tom!)

@Dinahlady. Thank you for your insight :) I have read through some of your posts... You are very KNOWLEDGEABLE. More insight from you would be much appreciated. I'm worried eating a lot of this meat during the week over a long period of time will lead to major health issues like stroke, heart attack, diabetes.... Thanks

Anyone else out th
ere that can help. Feel free to comment :)

It all "depends" Tom on what you want for your lifestyle! and you have not told us what your excercise levels (saying "regularly" is not enough to be accurate this can be varstly different to different people) are or what you want for your body.

The general public will be satisfied with this meat and eat it when it suits them. They do not care about their body and nutrition concerns are not an issue.

A body conscious person who wants to be lean may limit themselves to one serving a week depending on the other foods that they have. But they will be aware that more regular helpings of this product will not get them a lean physique.

A person serious about staying lean will rarely go near this type of food.

There are two main concerns as to the "healthiness" of this food are firstly the fat content and secondly the salt content. Fat obviously adds to your calorie intake and depending on what other foods you eat it is very easy to eat more calories than you should. Too much salt ingested over a long period of time can cause hardening of the arteries.

With out more information it is difficult to say what a "healthy" level of consumption is for you but imo if you want a healthy body long term then you would limit this product to once a week at the most preferably once a month.
