Starting older and testosterone

Recommended Posts

Gday all

First post and its a bit of an odd one I guess. Have been lifting for the last 7 months, having started last year at the ripe old age of 42! Have always been a bit of a runner but thought Id like to try and see what sort of size I could gain and try and fill out.

I guess my main question isnt unlike most newbies in terms of wondering what sort of time it takes to see some good gains if I eat and train right but more specifically what/when those gains will be considering my age and metabolism etc. Also I understand that mass growth requires testosterone which decreases as we age, compounded in my case by trying to stop my forehead from seemingly growing by taking Propecia which essentially, supposedly, supresses Testosterone. Guess I have appeared to answer my own question, if I want to get some proper gains I guess I need to embrace being a slap head and ditch the pills?

If I do go all Bruce Willis does anyone have some motivating and hopefully inspiring stories of late starting and good results?

Cheers Flying Pillock

Gidday, Pillock! :D

Never too late to start. However it's impossible to say how fast you'll see results - there are just too many variables, from age, metabolism, testosterone levels (as you've identified), through to your genetic makeup, training intensity, diet - even the amount of sleep you get!

It's true gains come slower as you get older, but gains also come easiest when you're just starting training, so you've got that on your side.

Re Propecia - I'm not sure that it does have any effect on testosterone levels. I think Propecia just blocks the production of DHT, which admittedly is a relative of testosterone (di-hydro testosterone) - but I don't think that should have much impact on your gains.

hey man welcome to the forum

no one can give you an accurate answer how long it'll take but once you start lifting you get hooked and have so much fun doing it that the time goes by easy.

if you are doing it to look a certain way then keep yourself motivated by picturing yourself doing whatever activity looking the way you want. that might be walking around the office buffed up in a suit, flexing on a stage in trunks or re-enacting some scene from baywatch. you might also draw motivation/inspiration from profesional bodybuilders regardless of whether you want to look like them, by watching some of their videos you might be touched by their passion, drive, determination.. if you want to look them up i'd recommend Ronnie Coleman and Kai Greene on youtube.

how have you been lifting/eating and what kind of gains have you had so far?

testosterone might be a problem at your age and you can always get that checked out properly. cruxis mentioned how to go about doing that in another post http://www.gymnation.co.nz/forum/general-chitchat/how-get-testosterone-level-check#comment-2685101
