Calipers

there's probably a walk in supplement/fitness shop in your area that you can go to and get one. never tried a metal one but really don't think it's made for body fat measurements (assuming that's what you're buying it for since you asked on this forum). the plastic ones can get a little uncomfortable, can only imagine how bad metal ones could be plus looks like the tip is kinda sharp

Those calipers are completely different from anthropometry calipers used for skinfold testing. They are an engineering tool. Dont buy them unless you want to measure bearings, bolts etc.

Try googling skinfold calipers new zealand and you will find some. Skinfold testing is only as accurate as the person who is conducting the test and is quite hard to get perfect. I used to do a number of tests a week when I worked in a sports lab and I still had a deviation of around 4%. Im my opinion you are better off sticking with other measures e.g. girth, weight, and the almighty mirror.

If you do really want to go down the track of skinfold testing then use the durham womersley formula.

Proper body fat calipers have springs so that they can apply a consistent amount of pressure each time. I don't think you'd ever manage to do that by hand.

This is more like what you're after:
http://www.nzmuscle.co.nz/shop/Shop+by+Category/Clothing++Accessories/Body+Measurement/AccuFitness+Accu-Measure-2.html

But that particular model looks a bit different to the calipers I've used, so I don't know whether it's a good one or not.

Will do the same thing though. Just got to remeber to apply the same amount of pressure each time you make a measurement.
