How was your 2013?

OK, I'll start...

Learnt -

Most recently, I've discovered that the world does not end when my workouts last for more than an hour. Or two hours. Or sometimes even longer... I haven't lost muscle or strength yet. Admittedly I haven't been doing this for too long, and maybe in 2014 my learnings will include the effects of overtraining. But for now there are only good outcomes (more exercise = more fat loss). And actually, I quite like working out, so more time in the gym is a good thing.

Achieved -

Sweet F.A. in terms of training. This year, my focus has been on getting Gymnation up and running. Up until recently training and motivation has taken a back seat. And that's ok. Some years are just like that. But next year will be another story...

Next year -

I want to reach and maintain 7-8% BF. If I can do that over 90kg, I'll be absolutely stoked. But I'd be happy enough just to hold my current weight of 88kg if I'm simultaneously getting leaner.

So that's me. What about the rest of you?

Learn't

Learn't new training techniques and working towards continually improving compound lifts technique. Also learn't the importance of mobility work, injury being the main thing that hinders strength gains.

Achieve

Competed at my first powerlifting competition, and came back to deadlift after a 3 year layoff due to a lower back injury in my early years of lifting. Working towards achieving a 220 squat and 500lb deadlift before this years end!

Next year

Wanting to make some strides in-terms of strength and remaining injury free dispite all the curve balls that are going to be given to me in-terms of work! Goal is a 620 total. Balancing work and training is going to be the real challenge next year as I will be travelling from project to project which are usually in very remote areas.

Learnt

The importance of committing to a life long flexibility and mobility program (yoga)! The necessity and contribution of carbs when studying and for gaining muscle mass. I've Learnt that I've spent so many years on low carbs making minimal muscle gains compared to if I just eat carbs and train consistently!

Achieved -

Gymnation challenge! Achieved sticking to my guns keeping my carbs and cals high whilst achieving fatloss/recomposition/strength gain - not dropping out carbs or doing monotonous cardio!. Achieved some strength and muscle gains despite my injuries and kept a good consistency with 5x5 as much as I could through HSFY (which is an achievement to get through in itself). Recovered from a lot of previous injuries I've had through yoga, massage and rehab work and worked up to the strength that I had before I dieted for bbing last year with a better foundation to improve. Overcame my IBS that I've had since I was 14 (at least 95% better!) through a more balanced diet.

Next year -

Want to keep sticking to decent high cals and carbs and work more towards recomposition. Want it to be a level that I can consistantly maintain and be actually sustainable forever! Meaning that I want to be able to eat approx the calories I am supposed to be able to eat for my activity level (not most peoples sustainable which usually refers to trying to sustain some kind of restrictive/defecit diet) and slowly work to be at a lower body fat level through improving in my strength training and yoga practice. Basically to stabilise my weight/bf more so that if I did have a change of life circumstances, got injured or had to change my diet or reduce activity levels I wouldn't baloon up (which happens if you try and constantly maintain a lower carb or cal diet). Basically - no more "dieting" ever and just sticking to my guns for the "long game".

Want to work towards competing in powerlifting and doing decent lifts for my class before I'm 24 (so in 2015). So sticking to strength programs and working on my lifts which fits in with the slow and steady fatloss (I guess aiming to get under 72kgs before I would compete in 2015).

Want to progress in yoga. To practice errday and be able to do a perfect yoga handstand and also other cool armbalances and things. Also pullups.

Want to do more gymnation comps!! And possibly PT again.

Learnt:

Consistency = the most important ingredient for long term progress.

Achived:

Finished 2nd at Auckland regionals.

Next year:

Learnt: To experiment with things and find out what works for me rather than what works for others. Always being afraid if i didn't eat regularly I would waste away and get fat I now enjoy infrequent meals (intermitent fasting style) and enjoy actually being satisfied after eating. I have also always been scared off training too higher volume and for too long a period, I now just train whatever volume I feel like (most of the time its much higher than before)  and have been getting far better results because of it.

Achived - Bought a house, Got engaged, got a promotion, had a holiday trip to  England

Next Year- I jump on stage for the first time at Nabba Waikato and finally take the step from being a "one day" guy to the best version of myself on stage. With the help of Bobsta.

K so I'll actually be srs this time lol.

Learnt

Bulking dirty isn't the way to go. Everything that's not muscle's going to come off in the end and it only makes cutting harder. Plus you look like a fat balloon when bulking. Learnt how to diet, and a lot about my body as I did my first bodybuilding comp.

Achieved

Competed in my first bodybuilding comp, got over that fear that I'm too small which is everyone's excuse. Made good gains, LBM at the start of the year was about 68kgs (80kgs at 15%) and LBM now is about 76kgs (84kgs at 10%). Strength wise I hit some good numbers and made plenty of PBs.

Next year

Continue to make gains and I will be happy. Staying injury free is my main goal so will be stretching, and doing prehab exercises religiously. I want to compete in bodybuilding again and step on stage dramatically improved from this year. Got big goals for powerlifting too. Should start posting some decent lifts next year.

LEARNT

How to benchpress better, learnt how to squat but still improving on it and learnt how to deadlift. Also leanrt how to strength train before i always followed 8-10reps religously and thought that was that best way to build strength but that rep range is more for bodybuilding where lower reps better for strength. Learnt about explosive ,pause and negative rep training.Learnt that stretching is a must as iv never stretched for training in my whole life lol but it has majorly improved all my lifts.

ACHIEVED

Won my 1st ever powerlifting comp which was on here lol , wanted to bench 180kg in 2 months of training i achieved that, wanted to bench 200kg by end of year but only hit 190kg so far but this months is no stength training just more higher rep bodybuilding styles and start back strength training in Jan, wanted to deadlift 260-280kg by end of this year i achieved that with best of 270kg, wanted to squat 220-240kg and achieved that, could have keeped strength training till this years is out but decided to give the body a break, oh and had a goal to try win the open and powerlifting comp on here and achieved that - just lucky that most the strong guys on here didnt enter lol.

NEXT YEAR

By April i hope to hit 240-260kg squat, 180-200kg paused benchpress and 280kg deadlift raw and no knee wraps, end of next year id like to compete in the worlds powerlifting comp in sydney and hope to hit 300+kg squat , 220+kg benchpress and 340+kg deadlift with total of 860kg @ under 100 or 110kg raw with no knee wraps (big dream and huge numbers but im goin to try as hard as i can). Also want to get under 10% b.f and stay there for the rest of my life if i can.

You guys are actually quite inspiring. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's updates on the way to these goals.

Ron - that's nearly a 3x bodyweight deadlift for you. Damn, that'll be cool!

Rapz - I can't wait to see the photos, bro. Stage conditioned at 115kg is insane.

Jimmybro - I hear you re balancing work and training. That's been my problem with Gymnation and my day job - I've been trying to balance work, other work, and training. (And not always successfully.)

Gym rat - you've had a great year. Getting on stage this year was a fantastic achievement.

Dinahlady - in terms of achievements, your Gymnation Challenge Before/After pics said it all. Hopefully we can run the Challenge again next year.

OnlyHuman - so do they let you out into the world as a fully qualified osteo next year? Good stuff!

Bambam - first comp next year, eh? You're in good hands with Bobsta. When did we last see pics of you? I'm pretty sure they're overdue!

Leeroid - mate, you've made massive gains this year. I've been impressed and jealous in equal parts. I'm pleased to see you plan to "start posting some decent lifts" next year - because of course your numbers this year have been rubbish. :P

Major-flavaz - for someone who's only just started powerlifting, you've got some serious potential. I'll be watching with interest.

Realtalk, what about you? Any plans for next year?

Keep 'em coming, guys - this topic is awesome!
