IRON GYM IN CHCH

STUMBLES

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone !  I will be moving to CHCH in the next month or so, all the way from the UK.. I am looking for a decent gym in the Cranford Street, Papanui, Town Centre type areas.  Once I get a set of wheels I can go further afield.  I hold 2 x World Powerlifting Titles, 5 x World Benchpress Titles and 2 x World Benchpress Records.  I am serious about my lifting.  Best bench is 250Kg at 123.4 BW and 255 at 134 BW.  I have lost a lot of weight and strength to make the grade for the emigration medical, and am looking to put some serious muscle back on.  Can anyone recommend a good Bodybuilding/Powerlifting Gym in the CHCH area ?  I will need a gym that has plenty of iron, Olympic Bars and plenty of weights - could do with plenty of 25Kg Discs (preferably round - cos hex discs wont roll over for deadlifts!) as well as the slim jims !  I am looking at training 3 or 4 times a week after work or on days off - a nice steakhouse nearby would be good !   Any adivce and help is very much appreciated ! Thankyou.

Really? So they just looked at your BMI, and decided it was too high? That had never occurred to me, but I guess that could be quite a common problem with bodybuilders/powerlifters. Interesting.

Pheddar - thanks - I will check that out !

Pseudonym - Yeah - the good old BMI !!!  As we all know BMI fails to take into account Bone Density, Muscle Mass / Density, age & metabolism, occupation, athletic involvement.....etc etc..... - in reality BMI is just a mathematical calcualtion, a guideline.

I was happy competing at 130 - 140 Kg, but my BMI was so high every Immigration Agent advised me to get as close to 110 as I could.  I got down to 112 & the Doc was happy with that. So far it hasnt been queried.  I am holding my weight at 112 - 115 until I get settled in NZ & get into Eastside barbell Club and get a good routine going.

I dont think the BMI drama is confined to just Powerlifters / Bodybuilders who are trying to emigrate.  It will be used as a guideline to assess everyone taking the medical.

Would other Athletes have questionable BMI's ? Think about those doing Ultra Marathons, Ballerina's, Sumo or even Sprinters - mind you they might be able to get in on a Sports Visa if they are World Class ?

On the other side of the coin - think of the BMI variations for those who do no fizz at all !

I am looking forward to some serious training at Eastside Barbell !
