Presses for the impinged

For those who have, or have had, shoulder impingement, are you able to train any barbell presses or does that just trigger inflammation etc?

My physio has said that Arnold Presses are fine due to the way the shoulder works through that motion but something like Behind Neck Press looks... less friendly.

So what do you guys do?

You may be able to go with dumbells, as you maybe able to moderate according to your level of impingement vs a barbell you may feel pretty "locked in" to whatever range of motion. I would also look at the angle you are pressing on to provide some level of relief from the symptoms.

I've recently been trying out a lot of neutral grip DB exercises and that does seem to be a winner so far.  Presumably greater stabiliser work too which has to be good for overall shoulder 'robustness'.

not sure if as effective an exercise but for me my shoulders been feeling pretty screwed lately so switched to reverse grip on pressing movements which does not trigger that pain (i think it gives more external rotation rather than internal rotation?)

Funny you should say that, I'm just looking at the t-nation article on reverse-grip bench press.  I'm not really sure what to make of that one!
