Is this summer worse than others?

Now is the time of year when newbies cram themselves into the gym in a last-ditch effort to get in shape for summer. The rest of us gym veterans have come to expect it, and we just grit our teeth, knowing that most of them will give up soon enough - and come winter, we'll have the place to ourselves again.

However, this year the newbie influx seems particularly bad. Rush-hour at Les Mills Britomart has been so busy the couple of weeks, many days there's not been a single machine free. You're hard-pressed to find enough room to stand with a pair of dumbells and do a bicep curl, let alone anything that requres more space.

As I say, I know it's the season for it, but this year seems much worse. Has anyone else thought the same this year?

(Oh, and to any gym newbie who might read this rant, it's not about you. As a Gymnation visitor, you're clearly a better type of newbie. We like you. Welcome!)

well it seems to be more and more accepted to gym for all kinds of people but probably more so now that it's not just mid20s males but high school kids male and female you'll see filling the place up so they can get 'shredded brah' (or get a serious case of APT going so they can walk around in a 'she squats bro shirt) for their alcoholic music festival shenanigans

i usually go at peak hour anyway, but now its just getting stupidly ridiculous! i see a new crowd of "aesthetic brahs" and there caked up grilfriends every week lol

not to sound like an a$$h0l3 i know everyone has a right to the gym but these phaggots telling everyone in the gym how successful there bulk was and they need to cut asap as they have too much mass now.... all 70kg of it, if that *ROFL*

this is all done while they huddle in groups attempting to perform zyzz like posing routines...

OH LAWD *bad*

Hah, funny seeing this post now..

I made a video today on mine and my brother FB page.

I think some people could do with watching this before getting on your high-horse. I know this seems like shameless self-promotion, but I just want to extend a positive message.

Couldn't agree more. Yeah I've noticed a lot more "Newbies" at my Gym this year; I love the fact that they come in for about 2-3 days a week in there "Town Gear"(Going out clothes, jeans etc) and do a few curls to get a pump then leave.

Nice sentiments in your video, Kyle. I agree with them, so perhaps I should clarify my original post. I'm all for encouraging newbies - hell, I've spent nearly a decade doing it on this site.

My problem is not with newbies "doing it wrong" or "doing it for the wrong reasons". I do have a problem with people who clearly aren't thinking about their fellow gym members (not tidying up the weights, hogging the machines while they chat... whatever) but that problem's not reserved just for newbies!

The issue I have is simply one of space. If there are too many people in the gym, no-one gets a good workout.

I don't know what the answer is. Perhaps gyms could cap the number of memberships. I know Burn Fitness in Takapuna does that. I can't imagine Les Mills adopting that approach, but at the very least they could stop offering memberships at a time when the gym is already overflowing. Save them for winter when they're needed.

Doubt this will ever happen outside of a handful of gyms, they sign the people up when they get in the door and where possible will even try get them on long term contracts. Don't think you can 'save' them for winter, when you tell new business 'we full come back in a few months' they'll either have found a new place by then or lost their motivation entirely.

It seems greedy, most of the summer cutters will have left by new years but in the mean time old members may leave too from being fed up with issues like no parking or lack of available equipment. I remember when I was still at Henderson Westwave it started to get ridiculously busy at certain points and while they had caps on how many people could enter the pools area at a time, they had no problem with letting the gym area fill right up. Wonder what the logic behind that is

ok so every week in a gym there are contracts coming to an end or people cancelling their contracts before the term has ended. Most established gyms hover around the same membership numbers the length of the year. So sure they sign a lot of people up but they also have people leaving on a very routine basis. To run a gym is an expensive operation and it can easily turn to shit if member numbers drop. Constant marketing and sign ups are what keeps it alive.

Which brings me to the next point so you have the influx of people coming to your gym in the summer season and over crowding your gym. More than likely these people have been members of your gym for quite a while and have only just started coming back because of summer. They are the ones who keep your gym running year round.
