in a public gym, say you already have some weights on the bar which your  currently using, and someone comes to take some of the weights from the power rack that your not using (or possibly not using yet)..

is it selfish for tht person to be taking the weights from your power rack?

do all the weights on the power rack belong to you even if youre not using them yet, and also the person taking doesnt know you were going to use them

not saying anything bad just want to know

I think it depends how many weights there are, and what they're doing.

For instance, if there's a few 20kg plates and they're doing an overhead press, then it's fine to take a plate, because the chances of them wanting it are slim.

But if they're doing squats, and there's only one 20kg plate left, then it's just polite to ask if they need it.

And for anything in between those two extremes... it probably depends on whether I feel friendly or not. :D

just take them, don't need to ask.

this. if its not on their bar then who cares. they can just find more weights when they're ready or wait for more, rather than having them sitting there being unused while you wait.

tell them to f*ck off and take them anyway.

I don't seem to have that problem anymore. 10 racks, most with 250kg+ in plates on them Yahoo

Different gyms.. different rules.  Even the 'house has busy days - nine out of ten racks in use this morning, and woe betide the person who doesn't a) unload his rack, and b) leave the plates in the approved place.

Pseu had it right, use some judgement:  if someone's struggling to OHP 40, they're probably not going to need all the 20kg plates on their rack, if they're squatting 180 and you want a couple of 2.5s, then they probably won't need them. But.. ask.
