ARTICLE: Dropping 10KG in 5 days to make weight

Hi guys, some great insight into what these guys go through to make weight.

Thiis would have to be the best example I've ever seen as we have a test subject that is only doing this for the research, baseline tests and trainers that have done this for one of the greatest pound for pound fighters in MMA. The author followed the technique to the letter and the results are interesting.

The whole idea of someone cutting this much weight in 5 days to make weight then putting it back on to fight is a bit of a joke, but it's wide spread and has been this way for decades. Drop 7-15kg, make weight then fight at 10kg or so over the weight class.... if you dont do this... you will be fighting a guy usually 10kg heavier than you... that aint fun..... funny system but not my place to judge.. it can kill performance too if done wrong.

Anyway, great read on the subject.

This is a really informative article and I will bookmark it in case I ever have to make weight for powerlifting in the future.

Reviving this old thread  :pfft:

Just curious as to how much you have or usually drop before a powerliting comp? Also is there a standard for PL like mma, eg. 24 hours before competition.

most iv done is around 4-5kgd, just loaded up on water week out and bring down the carbs, easy method 7 days 7L 6 day 6L, then just turn off taps around mid avo the day before weigh in and pissed it all out, 5 odd kgs its pretty easy, heard of power lifters dropping 40lb, i know i guys i lifted against at worlds in the u100kg class weighed in at 125kgs few day after, crazy barstard

standards for powerlifting vary by federation. NZPF/ IPF is two hours (so weigh-in starts at 0730 for flights starting at 0930), Leeroid might know about GPC/ CAPO?

I actually prefer the IPF weigh in rules. 24 hour weigh-ins don't really make sense to me, the awesome wilks type score some people get isn't really that true is it. 2 hour max weigh in more fair and doesn't encourage people to be idiots with diruretics and IV drips etc. Just my opinion.

im curious how much cutting weight then rehydrating/feeding affects strength

understand in boxing//mma etc where strength isn't #1 crucial thing and they can go to drastic measures to get to weight, but wonder how much strength is given away on the day by cutting weight, even with 24 hour weigh in

imo weigh in should be right before lifting, not even for health reasons, but cos it adds another dimension and some people are gonna naturally be able to lose more water weight than others = unfair

24 hour weigh in for GPC/CAPO. Last year I was sitting at 87kg morning weight and 89kg evening weight and would stop eating/drinking for 30 hours before weigh in plus sweating and make the 82.5s. Next day when I'm lifting I'd be back up to 89 or 90kgs. Hit PBs every time. I'd say you're just as strong if not stronger as long as you gain back the weight you lost
