The Ongoing UFC/MMA Discussion Thread

Thought I'd start this up as I know there are a number of MMA fans here. With the huge number of UFC, Bellator etc cards going on it seems silly to have to make a new thread each time.

So, use this thread to discuss upcoming fights, share predictions and discuss general MMA news. MMA Meme's and Gifs seem ideal too...

To kick off, UFC 166 was an amazing card. Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez went all out for 3 rounds. Sanchez only landed 27% of his strikes and that was the huge difference. He's asking for a 5 rounder with Nate Diaz. Dayum.

Cain Velasquez absolutely brutalised Junior Dos Santos over 5 rounds, with the fight stopped with 2 minutes left after JDS basically KO'd himself falling into the mat after a choke attempt. Cain faces Fabricio Werdum next. Can anyone in the HW division stop him? I'd say Josh Barnett is the best chance, and even he's got a 10% chance of winning IMHO.

Big news also is Chael Sonnen will be coaching TUF Brazil with Wanderlei Silva. When asked if Chael can speak Portugese, he asked, "Can Wand?"

Anyone want to take a crack at predicting the UFC 167 card?

I've got:

GSP via Unanimous Decision

Chael via UD (much as head says Rashad)

Rory via UD (this card ain't sounding exciting!)

Koscheck via UD

Ali B via UD

Hope I'm wrong on how!

As much as the 167 fight card looks great, I cant wait for Fight night 32 Henerson v Belfort. Two of my favorite fighters... both powerful and explosive on their feet and heavy hitters which can often overshadow the fact that they are brilliant grapplers.

But yeah GSP for the win but I can't discount Hendricks, he has that potential and more than a punchers chance.. but I just can't put the money on him...

Rashad .. does he even want to fight anymore? does he still have that fire? great fighter but I think Chael is just too heated and intense at the moment to take anything but a loss. Chael by submission.

I had no idea Sanchez only hit 27%, that was one amazing fight... and Cain... those foot stomps... amazing fighter, moves and fights like a light heavyweight... maybe less. No competition at present.

I agree to a degree.

Certainly it appears he won, however...

Hendricks clearly won rd 2 (GSP pretty much KO'd on his feet), and rd 4.

I gave GSP rounds 3 and 5. Which is absolutely amazing given what happened in rd 2.

It then comes down to rd 1. Two judges gave it to GSP, and that's hard to take as Hendricks landed some bombs. However the strike stats were practically equal.Takedowns were 1 a-piece, with GSP holding Hendricks down for 40seconds and GSP getting straight up after Hendricks one. I think the submission attempt by GSP is what likely threw two of the judges to give GSP that round.

I guess the big issue for most people is that GSP was far more damaged, meanwhile Hendricks looked like he went for a jog. Which is one good thing about Pride rules, part of decision making was based upon damage, and also the totality of the fight rather than each round being it's own entity.

I can now see how GSP won, I don't think he did, but at the same time the scoring system needs an overhaul. I won't say that Hendricks NEEDED to finish GSP, but he certainly could have been busier on his feet.

Yeah, I can see how GSP won too.... just...or at least I can appreciate the case that could be made. The stats could almost be edged either way (even though Hendricks has the edge) but to dethrone the champ you need the stats to be a little more one side I think. Still, I think Hendricks won this. He displayed a clear ability to dominate the champ in this fight. How the judges didn't give him round one is crazy.
