Qualifying totals?

You don't need a total to compete at a novice event bro, the first stage you would need a qualifying total for is North or South islands.  (generally) anybody can rock up on the day at a novice and sign up for a crack.

There is a Canterbury Raw event on November 23rd (not sure exactly where, maybe Christchurch?), but apart from that, there isn't much else on anywhere in the country heading into the last quarter of the year.  I think this is because most people are putting a big focus on Oceanias/Commonwealths in December.  Things will start to pick up again following that as each association prepares for their regional events.

If you were keen on making a trip of it though, we hold the Bledisbro Cup novice event in November (probably around the weekend of the 16-17th) here in Wellington.  It's the biggest novice event in the country, and one we get a whole lot of newbs going along to, often from all over the country.

Yeah there are plenty early next year, the NZPF calendar doesn't come out until December-Januaryish though, so you'll need to wait for that.  Most regions have at least one novice comp preceding their regionals, and regionals across the country are usually March-April.

Down your ways, you might want to get in touch with Otago Weightlifting (who manage Olympic Weightlifting and Powerlifting down in Otago) and ask for an indication of any novice comps coming up - here is their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/otago.weightlifting.
