NZIFBB AUCKLAND CHAMPS

Recommended Posts

Nelly is freaking huge at the moment and will never lose a show on mass! However the challenge for him has always been to come in lean enough and dry. This year he's been working with Dean Geddes so it'll be interesting if they can nail it? I talked to Nelly last week but he was pretty covered up so I can't even give you an educated guess at what he'll be like, however as Gary Jones told him he could be a world champion if he can nail his condoning.

The priest looks amazing and although his legs haven't quite caught that unbelievable upper body of his they're not too bad either. Definitely in the mix for overall.

I posed with Kristian Bray the other day, he's looking full and hard. Still over 100kg @ 4.something %. If he gets the carb load and water right he's definitely a contender. The best I've ever seen him at present.

Looking forward to seeing Jordan Earl in the Juniors who's been getting some good guidance from Harry Bickers, as well as Michael Burge who's shredded to bits in the 70-80 Novice.

I would pick Nelly to win the overalls this weekend

I dunno GR, gonna be a tough one to pick!

Nelly, Andy & Kristian all have their strengths - Nelly's size is insane, Andy has those huge arms & delts with a tiny waist, and Kristian probably has the most complete physique of the three.

I reckon whoever comes in the hardest & driest has got this one.

That said we never know who else might show up?

I was speaking to a Physique competitor in the gym tonight. It sounds like that class will be absolutely huge.

Yep heaps!

Two of the favorites would have to be Kurt Dell, who's been chasing a Pro Card in this class for a while, and Jake Campus who has moved from Bodybuilding to the boardies division. Gonna be a good showdown!

I'm gonna pick Andy to take overall. I may be bias because he's a good friend, but he's big, full and conditioned. Nelly still looks like he has a bit to drop in that pic and I've never really liked Kristian's physique. He gets really conditioned, I'll give him that, but he just never seems to be as full as I wish he would be.

As for boardies, I think Kurt's confidence has taken a bit of a knock after I tore him down a couple days ago lol (See his athlete page to see his whingey status about how much critique he can't handle. Oh I mean "haters"). I think Jake will beat Kurt IF the judges feel Jake isn't "too big".

Come to think of it I am going to change my pick for the overall after reading Nates comment to I am going to sit on the fence for that one and it should be a very exciting battle for the overall as for the brodies it should be good battle between Jake Campus and Kurt Dell,I am going to pick Jake Campus for the win in the brodies

Just to throw another consideration in the mix, I posed with Kristian on Sunday and he was the fullest I've seen him (around 102 @ 4.something % from memory). I know he's working with a new nutritionist this year so will be interesting to see the differences.

In physique I'm not even going to guess, always seems a bit more subjective (if thats possible!) than bodybuilding classes. Again its a huge class so you never really know til the day.

I went to the prejudging yesterday, and was really impressed. I like the SKYCITY theatre - it definitely adds a bit of class and polish to things. The 700 seats were looking pretty full for much of the prejudging, and I think the evening show had sold out online.

109 competitors, apparently a record number for NZIFBB Auckland champs. High standards, too. The teenage/junior men's class - man, there are some big boys coming through. Watch out for these guys in future.

But without question, the class that stole the show was Men's Physique. More than half of the entire show was in this class!

That's a good thing, but I couldn't help notice the numbers of contestants in the new classes (Bikini, Physique, etc) compared to the "traditional" bodybuilding classes (only one female bodybuilder in the entire show). Is this a sign that people aren't so interested in the traditional classes any more? Or have the traditional competitors jumped to another federation? Whatever the answer, it's not really a problem for the NZIFBB - with 109 competitors, it's pretty clear what they're doing is popular.

The one thing I wasn't a big fan of was getting every individual competitor to do a full set of mandatory poses as they came on stage. I'm all for giving athletes more stage-time (they've earned it, after all) but this really dragged out the length of the show - a minute per competitor equals nearly two hours extra with 109 competitors. It also meant that if you were the first competitor in your class to be called, after hitting your solo mandatories, you then had to stand uncomfortably on the side of the stage while everyone else did theirs. Then you lined up and posed all over again as a group.

The Physique guys seemed to do it quite smoothly as part of their entrance on stage (they have fewer poses anyway), but maybe the Bodybuilding classes could just hit one or two solo poses in future.

Anyway, that's a minor point about what was overall a very good show. So now, the photos (sorry I can't get them to show in order)...
