Gymnastic Rings

Gator

Recommended Posts

I want to add into my routine something different targeting the core and stabilising muscles and thought setting up some gymnastic rings in the garage might be a good change.

Before I buy the rings, I was just wondering if anyone out there has given these a go and how they found them?

Cheers

The guys at Aspyre Gym in hastings have these and people often use them (not just crossfit peeps).

I've only used for chin up variations so can't really comment.

Actually some of the guys at Powerhouse Gym in Wellington may be able to comment as I know some there use these (Pala etc).

Someone had left a set hanging in my gym one day, so I gave them a go. Man, they are hard! Chins and dips suddenly go up to a whole new level of difficulty. And as for the muscle-up I optimistically attempted... yeah, nah.

:P

Good fun though. If they're not terribly expensive, I'd say go for it. Have a play.

Rings are fantastic for adding a bit of variation and extra challenge, I muck around on them from time to time but have never really had any structure with them. There's endless combinations of what you can use them for, have you been watching many videos at all?

Though I lack structure, my favourites are basic chin up/pull up variations as nate said, inverted rows, push up variations and a random assortment of core focused movements. There's a few in this video:

Windscreen wipers can be really challenging, and another favourite is somewhat shown in the video, where you hold yourself upside down with legs straight up in the air. Just holding that position can be challenging, but try letting your legs fall out 20 degrees or so, and then back towards your face, and once that gets too easy you can let 1 leg fall out whilst trying to keep the other one dead straight in the air. If you can manage ab wheel rollouts no worries, doing them on rings is a whole new world of challenge too.

I just put a set in my garage last night as I had nowhere to put a chinup bar. As people have said they pose some extra callenges and are a lot of fun to use.

Edit to add: they are cheap enough to give a go without too much risk anyway.

Phedder - Thanks for the link it was very helpful. The triangle exercise made me laugh. I am not one that would usually care what people think but I think I would even struggle to do this one in the gym - just as well it is getting set up in the garage.

Psyke - I see that you can pick them up for $50 - $60 on Trade Me, I'm not sure of the quality though. Can you tell me where you got yours and how much?

I got mine off 1-day.co.nz for about $30 when they had them on there for sale. Realistically if you are just using them for your own use it's up to you how much you want to spend.

Wood would be nice but the plastic ones are comfortable enough for what I want, I would just make sure they have decent straps.

I've been using these for a couple of months now and they work great. Everything you do on them involves core strength therefore your core is going to become rock hard! highly reccomend giving them a go.

I'm sold, shall buy some this week and give it a crack.

As a matter of interest can you tell me if you are adding the exercies into your individual muscle group training or have you set aside a space in your training specifically for the rings targeting your core?
