Won't heal - surgery your best option, been there done that no dramas.

ACC can be funny with accepting hernia claims so unless you've got medical insurance get the process underway ASAP.

how long has it been since u got it and has it been fixed permanently? how long would it take to get big

Really? I'd have thought that was one injury that was clearly caused by a specific accident - and therefore exactly the type of injury they're happiest to cover. Interesting that it's not the case...

I'm in the middle of getting approval for AAC to cover the op for a hernia I have 1" above my belly button.

You may remember me talking about the same hernia/lipoma a year ago, they found it on the ultrasound but when I had an MRI scan a month later the hernia under the lipoma was gone (healed I'm guessing).

Recently I was doing overhead dumbbell tricep extension and felt a tearing in the same spot. Doc tried to say it was nothing again but I insisted I went for another ultrasound and the hernia was showing up a lot more this time around (must have been a bigger tear). The doc at the ultrasound said the lipoma most likely grew there due to the hernia underneath.

So now that it is reported as a hernia I'm going through the ACC process. This is straight off the ACC website:

"ACC does not cover: ...

  • non-traumatic hernias (eg from coughing or sneezing, or not directly as a result of trauma)"

After the initial claim was sent away I recieved a letter back with a questionair that was obviously trying to determine if the hernia was definitely a result of an accident. I have sent that away and have now recieved a letter saying they are in the process of getting all the relevant medical notes from my doctor. That was about a week ago so I'm going to chase it up tomorrow and see where they are at.

Here is some additional information:

"A minority of hernias result from a specific injury event. For example, pain and a lump in the groin after a sudden slip while carrying a heavy object is often cited as the cause of a hernia, in which case application can be made to the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) to cover the costs of repair. Certain criteria must be met for the application to be successful, in which case the costs of repair of the hernia in a private hospital will be covered in full, if it is done under a contract arrangement, or in part, if done through the alternative, co-payment system."

Basically you need to show specific traumatic event caused it and report it asap to doctor and register the claim. Otherwise your chances of coverage are slim....you'll get cited non traumatic hernia and asked to prove otherwise....

Mine was 15 years ago. Got surgery (no mesh in my case). Started squatting again within a month (light) & no issues since in powerlifting / strongman.

15 years looks like i have nothing to worry about, just a question was yours protruding out the skin and i feel sick in the stomach after workouts eventhough mine is really small like a marble size

Interesting to find someone with the same problem. How long was recovery for you? Any problems with it now?
