New Zealand named 12th most overweight country

In the NZ Herald today:

New Zealand has been named and shamed as one of the fattest countries in the world.

A report by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation ranked New Zealand as having the 12th highest number of overweight and obese people.

The US, which previously had the worst record, was overtaken by neighbouring Mexico, where 70 per cent of adults are overweight and a third obese.

The study found 27 per cent of New Zealanders were obese, just behind Lebanon and alongside Slovenia.

Australia was the 17th fattest nation and Britain 19th.

Are we really that bad? That one in four of us is obese? I'm surprised we rank worse than Aussie and Britain, too.

Hah! I wondered about that when I saw that "the average Kiwi was estimated to weigh 81.3kg last year".

Obesity is a massive problem in New Zealand, it is more  common among pacific islanders & with New Zealands drinking culture the cases of diabetes is bound to increase..

how is this assessed? if its based on that stupid BMI index , according to that im close to morbidly obese or whatever you call it, but in reality far from it.  i agree there a a few too many fat fellas and chickas in NZ, but if its based purely on weight and height  i dont think its an accurate refelction.

From the article, it appears average weight was the sole metric.

Wow okay I actually read all the words this time and there is no news.  Bloomy put out an article pulling together a bunch of numbers from reports and surveys which have all been individually reported on.  NZHerald doesn't really seem to serve any purpose (unless you polish shoes/boots a lot).

 

Anywho.  Was at St Lukes last night and yeah we have an obesity problem.  No power lifters in that food court.
