Sun beds - have you, would you, do you?

How many of us use sun beds?

The Auckland Council has just brought in new by-laws that require sun bed operators to have a licence, and prevent anyone under 18 from having sun bed treatment.

The Cancer Society is very happy about this, but would really quite like to ban them outright. Cancer Society Auckland chief John Loof says, "We really want to see an end to sun beds that's the more important goal. They don't add any real value and they medically create a risk but this is a good interim step.''

Personally, I find I need sunlight. I discovered this when I was working overnight shifts - without sunlight, I get a bit depressed. And it's the same in winter. I find a few short sessions on the sunbed makes a huge difference to my mood. I'd hate to see them banned completely.

So what are your thoughts on tanning beds? Are they the evil cancer-tubes they're often made out to be? Or are they perfectly safe when used correctly?

Haven't used them yet but will next year during winter when I get ready for bodybuilding competitions along with MT2 so that I don't have to spend as much time in them.

It's just like everything, you need to use in moderation.

I first used them 3x per week for like a month and saw no change in colour and they sometimes used to burn me a little after 4 mins so gave up.

But then took MT2 and for a week and got darkest ever been with like one 4 min sunbed a week and didn't burn once even on holiday for the next 2 years.

I do agree and find them relaxing and mood bosting. I like how it makes ur skin smell too haha.

I feel like the sun is probably better for you than the fake sunbeds (no science backing though) but I also think its much more dangerous as from what I've read burning severely is the issue relating to cancers. As someone who burns really really badly very easily I can see how things like MT2 or sunbed use to keep tan levels up to "protect" against burning in summer or on holiday does make sense, though the safety of MT2 as a drug is still debatable as the research on it was abandoned slightly prematurely as far as I know.

But also some conspiracy theorist part of me thinks that sun cream chemicals may contribute somewhat to cancers. Not something I've ever thoughrally bothered with looking into that much so I'm prob all bro'd up about it.

Yeah, my argument is that with a sunbed, the amount of UV exposure can be controlled, so there's really no excuse for burning. The sun, although natural and probably better for you in many other ways, has a much more unpredictable UV level.

MT2... from memory it got to Phase 3 trials - which is the massive one with loads of people. I think having reached that level, you can be reasonably confident of its safety (although long-term use is still unknown).

Hmm.. I can't remember - I thought only MT1 was the one that got decent studies?? Might have to dig out the info. And yeah the long term effects are an issue - but I guess its been around large scale (eg in the UK) for a while now there would probably be info/press if people had been badly affected by it in the long run?

Everyone who has tried it seems to dig them - big time in fact.

On the other hand the NZ Cancer Society claims the radiation will turn you into a sterile Godzilla (if I remember the detail correctly).  Would be really nice if they indicated what studies they were referring to so we could read them too...

I finally got some info from my local just yesterday and will have a crack as soon as I have a chance.

Had a larf when I asked what the difference was between the 'basic bed' and 'luxury' and was told 'about 20 years'!

While I don't nessarily disagree with better regulation. We have probably gone to far with the anti-sun message. A lot of research out there indicates NOT enought sun has severe health consequences due to the lack of vitamin D (and we can pretty only get what we need from the sun). I bought this guys book and as a result am now popping vitamin D supplements during winter. The message at the end of the day is don't burn but get some sun or take supplements. Using a sunbed is one way of getting a regulated dose without needing to burn.

I love them, I did some research last year and many dermatologists suggest getting a base tan before summer to prevent you from burning. So I did and last year is the first year that I never burnt. So this year I have already started, I love them and they make me look skinner than I actually am, but thinking that I may just have to go once a week during winter.

This year I started with 12 mins and then did three session over two week slowly increaing the time to 25 mins last week. Just love being able to actually fully relax and unwind, especially after a gym sesson.

Good lord dude!

I did 6mins, then 8mins, 9mins, 9mins.

I think I'd be African/10 if I tried 25mins!

MT2 not even required...

It really depends on the sunbed. It used to be that 30 minutes was a standard "full-length" session. I liked that - it meant I could go to sleep.

Most new ones are much more powerful and do it in half the time.

And this is why I love the beds and not the capsule. I get to fully relax, now that I am going once a week, I find that the tan wears off real fast. Or am I just becoming tananorexic???? But alas I’m going to go as I look  hell of a lot healthier

I like them and use them occasionally. I need the sun exposure, shift working or winter I struggle and the bed makes it easier for my mood wise. Throughout summer I dont use sunscreen - just a little coconut oul which has natural spf in it. I personally am more concerned about ack of vitamin d than I am about getting skin cancer. However in saying that I eat very well, which has an effect on how your body deals with things like cancers. So I believe that Im better off getting the sun and all the positive effects from the sun as long as I also take good care of my body from the inside with a whole heap of antioxidants. But thats just me :)

love these now, did e3d for 20 x 10-15 minute sessions (first 5 went in the "weaker" bed, then switched to "stronger" bed) and this was about 3 months ago. got so so dark and i havent gone back to anywhere near how pale i was before hand, held some tan and it seems to be permanent which is awesome, also helped fade stretchmarks and cleared up whatever leftover acne that accutane hadnt got rid of

if it wasnt for the skin cancer worries i would go every 3 days for the rest of my life srs
