Hey guys. I'm completely new to GYM/Bodybuilding and would appreciate some guidance and assistance :). I've been playing tennis all of my life so I'm used to sport being a part of my life, but I think it's time to add some mass. I'm thinking about joining jetts mainly because it's 24/7, and with my work I sometimes work odd hours.

I'm 85kgs at the moment and 1.88m tall. I'm thinking 3 days a week would be good for a start, would anyone recommend anything else? My diet's not the best, I think mainly because I used to play PC games and I can pretty much eat anything and not gain fat - is that a good or a bad thing?

Anyways nice to find a NZ site :D

Hey man. Good to have you here.

Joining a gym is the right idea. And there's nothing wrong with Jetts - some branches can be a little on the basic side, I believe, but they'll be perfectly adequate for you for now. And if the 24/7 means you can do a workout you'd otherwise have missed, well that trumps everything.

A 3-day workout split is a good way to start. The old Push/Pull/Legs split is a classic.

Yeah I think I'll try Jetts and if it's not exactly what I want I can always change. Any recommendations for good weight Gyms? Do you know anything about Les Mills?

Just researching the push/pull/legs routine now, seems there's quite a variety. Do you do any cardio with them as well?

Do you know anything about Les Mills?

Yep, I'm a member of shiny-land. :D

They tend to have good equipment and atmosphere, but they are often jam-packed at rush-hour and they lock you into long-term contracts (or charge you exhorbitant fees if you don't).

Where are you training though? Les Mills Britomart recently went 24/7 during the week.

That said, I think for you Jetts is probably the best bet while you find out if gym training is your thing.

Welcome spykerwolf. Where abouts in auckland are you??

If you could start out on a 3 day a week programme where you trained your entire body each workout, and then progress to a 2 way split (as suggested by Psuedo) 6 months or so down the track you would benifit greatly. Depending upon your financial circumstances it would be good if you could higher a Personal trainer just for one or two sessions  to put a programme together for you. Or join a gym like Club Physical where a free personal training session and programme are free as part of your membership.

Hey I'm on the north shore but I work in Mt Eden. I think I'll join Jetts for the moment and see how that goes. I'm getting married in 5 months so I'm pretty keen to start cutting actually. I think my bodyfat is around 17%, but that's just from guessing haha. Does anyone know a website that has pictures with different types of bodyfats?

Here's one I found after a quick search. I have seen better charts, but they seem to be hiding from me tonight...

You could always take a photo of yourself, post it here, and we can give you a BF estimate, and suggest what you can work on...

  • 1 year later...

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply - been busy with soccer so I haven't been to the gym since. I quit soccer and re-joined Jetts on Monday, and I can't believe how good I feel. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's workout. I'm doing Stronglifts 5 x 5 with a buddy at the moment - eating about 2850 calories. Trying to bulk since it's winter and I personally think I fit into the skinny-fat category. Very excited to have found a NZ lifting site, nice to meet all you guys :D
