Does Steve Orton have top 10 Olympia Potential?

Recommended Posts

Hmm it seems that in a sport where you are judged on your appearance, when someone does exactly that, they become a "hater"

Not saying he takes mass amounts of gear or whatever, wouldn't have a clue what he takes and it doesn't really matter. Just saying that to be really competitive at the olympia (top ten) you generally have to have the type physique that looks effortless. Yeah there are mass monsters and guys who look like they're about to explode (Branch warren) but they have other marketable assets (eg. Branch's hardcore training) for the most part the top top guys don't look like that. Furthermore these guys have a certain character to their physiques, they have a particular look that appeals to a certain group of people. Steve needs to find his angle I guess, something that's a marketable asset, maybe that's his insane wheels?

Steve looks amazing, definitely pro potential and potential to be a pretty good one, just don't know if his genetic structure will allow him to get to that pro size/conditioning without looking stressed. If he can market himself and not allow himself to fall into the background of the thousand other massive/conditioned pros out there he will do well. Time will tell I guess.

Seems someones paying Steve some attention:

I just hope he gets judged fairly at the Southerns against the Aussie favorite Jake Nikopoulis (can't see Darryl beating them yet though anything can happen on the day), I'm sure their conditioning will be similar but Steves probably 20kg heavier?

He will be to obvious - jakes 7kg lighter this year - got small

Regardless of what you think of his "asthetics", Steve is one of the most promising Bodybuilders to come out of NZ in a long time & will be closely followed by his brother, Kagan. Most guys cannot achieve the level of muscularity & size he holds even at an advanced stage of their time in the sport. Asthetics are always going to be subjective. I remember the days when Branch Warren had a guts wider than a Mac truck but he seems to have got on top of it. Ronnie was another one. Its just that his overall structure put it into proportion.

Steve is just a natural born bodybuilder. He know's how to train hard, eat well & has the right attitude & dedication to go the hard yards. If you think it all comes out of a bottle, you would be very wrong.

Does Steve have top potential YES he does, Did any one think that 9th place at 1997 mr O was going to win the following 8, for those that spend more time in front of computers judging others rather than themselves than under a squat rack I would say vvv

Good post haha

I'm a big fan of Steve Orton and was inspired and lucky enough to see him on stage at last years NABA WFF Nationals. Massive guy and it's awesome to see him walk out on stage and blitz the local competition by a country mile.

Yep, I am inspired by him and I haven't been inspired by many others over the years that have reached even higher rankings.

It is sad to see people cry about haterz and defend criticism tho when the topic of discussion is about Olympia potential and Mike and Nate make comments about personal postings calling people haterz or hating on judgmental people. Keep it on topic please! (oh wait Nate IS a mod it must be ok to call people names on NZBB - sweet as I get that now!)

I haven't read a single haterz post in this thread and we still get defensive people. Don't you feel stupid?

Will he reach the Mr O stage? If he wants it that badly yeah he can, just like the other 00's of Pros he'll have to fight for the right. Be good to see anyone reach that level whatever country they come from...I just wanna see the top 15-20 most incredible physiques.

Peace to all the guys out there that wanna say they don't think he'll make it but too scared of being called a hater by Nate or Mike

Haters? lol you must be reading something different to me? My comments were aimed at NZmusclemonster for saying Kingsnorth was better than me haha :)

The post on here have all been very positive in general. However I have stood in the USA beside top 10 O contenders, so I know pretty close up how they look, and for Steve to get to his peak he still has 15yrs of potential improvement. and with the improvement and the mind set that he has developed since I first trained him 5 yrs ago develops at even half the pace he will do well as a pro, then can he make top 10 at the O... that will depend on him at the time and not at what he looks like at 23yrs of age, which is what some people base there opinions.

If my comments came across as over defensive I apologies, but feel stupid?? NAH def not stupid as I said back when Steve was 19 he would be Mr NZ by 23, I feel a bit stupid for the fact I didn't think he would do it twice by then.

I just spent the last 4 days with steve training with him here in Australia and watched him prepare his meals, prepare for every workout, cardio session and how every breath he took was one breath closer to his goal this yr..... I have been doing this for over 20yrs, im the one with the Pro Card and he was inspiring me.

Nice posts by Android and MikeD

Would love to see some more pics or a link to his latest show to have a better look

But by that 1 photo and last years stuff the guy is truly gonna be one of NZ's best.

And as for MikeD I would place him over MikeK every day, dude was a very pleasing physique with some good mass

The nationals in Welly back in 99 or 2000 whenever it was awesome

Justin's "broken toe" haha

Good to see NZ bodybuilding getting back to that level

I was very lucky to see Steve up close when Steve was in Dunedin with his clients for the NABBA South islands in Dunedin last year I was amazed by the size of his calfs and it would be great to see Steve on the O stage one day

Huh?

Two chips at me for the post below? Please..... isn't "haterz gon hate" a cliché throwaway line?

Lol maybe you guys should see his teenage photos and see how hard it is for him to hold mass....... freakshow at a young age.

As for the masses of gear comments. .....trolol at best kids.

Haters always gonna hate......

Btw Branch Warren aint looking effortless. ...in fact I'd say Phil Heath is about the only one who does

I'm a little confused Andrew - if you've got a problem with me maybe man the f*ck up and say it. Tell you what I'll be at les mills tomorrow at 11am.......feel free to discuss with me in person

What a dickhead posting Nate, u have my phone number wtf is with a public call out, is it street cred bro?

Read the topic, stay focused and stop trippn out.

Can do Sunday got my daughter with me 2moro, but I bet you can't hold a decent conversation without getting angry and off topic ....see your above reply in context to the topics heading.

Your reply was talking about haters dude, if u can't c that in the context of a thread asking about people's opinions on a future event you or anyone cannot predict, u ain't that bright.

Lolz Android, phone call was a good idea afterall!

Did come across as a dig at me but understand where you're coming from now

Catch up for a train soon

For the record guys feel free to speak your mind, my comments were tongue in cheek and not meant to stop people feeling like they could voice their opinions! :D

Soooo my opinion. ...lets see on Sunday on the Gold Coast! That should decide the best amateur in the australasian region.

Still a big step from that to the O Stage, look at guys like Big Ramy that Dennis James is bringing in for his Pro debut at the NY Pro this weekend! Google him - the new standard!!!

One thing I'd say right now is Steve has legs that wouldn't look out of place on the O stage.

Great comments BigMD

Having been out back at comps with both Steve and Kagan you can tell these lads have real focus. Hard workers who are prepared to give everything to get to their ultimate goal.

My personal opinion of Steve's physique has always been freak! He's got stirations on stirations and muscle on muscle. His weakness has always been posing (can, is been fixed) and his chest. Looking at the pics from the comp last week it appears his chest is filling out and taking a more pleasing shape. He has years ahead of him to fix and adjust things so the reality is he will end up one of our best pros.

Steve and Kagan keep up the hard work lads, most of us are in awe of what your doing.

BIGMD, you maybe forgetting that you judged me in a wellington comp.... gave me a placing that not many people agreed with... does that make you a hater as well??

Does it make my opinion more valued now that you know I have donned the thong in battle?

In a completely subjective sport there seems to be a lot of sensitive people.

Maybe thats why I gave it away.... I wasn't sensitive enough.

As someone that has been to an Olympia, that has been to more pro shows than most nz "pros" on here have competed in, I weighed in with my learned opinion. It seems many weren't ready for it. Therefore I will go back into the shadows before I hurt anymore feelings.

hahahahaha

I'd say I'd take Mike D at least one day of the week....contest day.

Now watch the Wrath of the Sunshine Coast unfold :)

Sorry MikeK wasn't meant to come across like a tool comment haha

In all seriousness though, are you still looking at competing? Think your last show (Aust) the conditioning in photos looked awesome.

Wow, this topic has drawn out a number of quality members who've been pretty quiet for a long while. It's great to see you guys back. (And to everyone else, let's not discourage them with too much bickering. )

Just like the old days of multple egos having a showdown :pfft:

I think a lot of people missed the "potential" part in this question.

He wouldn't compete in an Olympia now, obviously, he placed 7th at a national amateur show last year, so he won't place 1st in an IFBB pro show to qualify for the Olympia.

Does he have the potential? Yeah. But so do a lot of guys. And I'm not taking away from Steve, but he would definitely have to fight his way to that position, because he's not the only person the world who can/wants to make it there.

He definitely has the conditioning, but he needs to fix his posing, I think. He leans back too far on his front double bi and front lat, taking away from the actual size of his lats and arms and also making his abdomen look longer than what it is (Also takes away from lines due to it being stretched too much). On that note, I think he needs to do more ab work in terms of thickness. If he added more size on to his abs, his physique would improve a LOT just from that. Let's not forget how much of our physique is actually our abs.

So yes, he has potential, but he needs to fulfill that potential to get there, I'll be happy if he gets there, but he'll have to get there first.

No immediate plans to compete, too busy with BSc in NZ to train to the required level.

My condition last time was spectacular ..... on Thursday night

I tried something different with my carb load and totally spilled over and looked terrible. By Sunday I was about halfway back to my Thursday condition, all a learning lesson that I can take into it next time.
