I don't believe steroids made any guy want to kill his wife. Unless the steroid used was 'Constant Nagging'. That shit makes me want to kill.

If someone gets caught, their lawyers gather up any reason except the realistic 'personal choice' to get their client off.

If I got done for a crime I commited out of rage or stupidity and the punishment was severe, I would blame steroids to try and lighten the penalty. I know for a fact that steroids don't really affect my personality much, if at all but I'd tell the judge and jury that the elevated test levels turned me into a madman with no sense of right or wrong.
