Deadlifts, How to get them Stronger?

Recommended Posts

There will be many views on this topic but I can't seem to get my Deadlifts stronger? I have a PB of 300kg of the floor RAW but I can't seem to get past the 300? can any one share training methods with me? Cheers

speed work, pulls against band tension. chuck up a vid of your dead mate so we can see where its breaking down

I fail on the floor..

Any advice for that?

So for a one rep max, your slowest/toughest part to get through is just after breaking the weight from the floor? Without seeing a vid of your deadlift...

I've never really had a problem with weakness in that part of my deadlift, but guys that I know who have had issues with being slow off the floor swear by deficit deadlifts. I used to train this anyway just to keep that speed off the floor going, as it was critical for me to get some good momentum to break through my sticking point (in lieu of fixing my technique...). Use a block that is 2-3 inches high and I'd recommend a moderate weight.

Mike Tuchscherer recommends pause deadlifts - if you are slowest just off the floor, pause at that spot for a 2 count, and then follow through with the lift. Keep the weight light-moderate if you give this a try, it is a very tough exercise! I do these currently in my program, but pause a little higher to help with my weakness a bit closer to lockout.

Hardly gospel, but just some suggestions. My 2c.

Cheers man will give deficit deadlifts a go.

Once get the bar off the ground its up easy. Might be my set up not sure, I have a hard time transferring the load to my glutes and hamstrings.

I only just started deadlifting 3 weeks ago though here's a video of pulling 190kg in my first session in 2 years was happy with it but think I have plenty more in the tank. Was a bit under the weather this day to went out the night before...

Current accessory work stiffleg deadlifts and rack pulls.

Doing deadlifts again today will try get some video.

Yeah a little bit, having your feet close will contribute to that a little bit too I think. You want to keep your back as straight as possible and drive with your legs then lock it out once the bar is past your knees.. Once you roll your back it makes lockout alot harder.

Just my 2c, probably a lot of bro science but that's my take on it.

Hey Drizzt

Awesome to hear from you brother I think overall I'm weak on deadlifts?

I find lifting from the floor and when I get to my knees and driving my hips through that's where I'm weak also? but I'll post a deadlift up tomorrow so everyone and you can see where I'm going wrong? I also get a sore lower back? is this due to core strength? or technique?

Regards Monuia le po

I'm no expert but I think with dead lifts less is more.

I don't train deads every week but have been training Westside Barbell Methods and got really good gains (for a female master lifter :shifty:). In Westside you do all the movements around the full lift eg. deficits, speed pulls (these are great too for that first part of the lift), pulling against bands, chains, rack pulls, bb shrugs, db shrugs....the list goes on but I would probably only do a full dead every 4-6 weeks. My raw went from 135kg to 150kg at 61kg. Just my 2c worth

good lift bro. few things id tweak

1st off, your feet posistion is fine. its the bar thats too close to your shins. set up about half an inch to and inch from your shins

-keep your head in a neutral posistion believe it or not it will help your overall speed of the pull. your head should be in perfect alingment with your spine....yours is not

21180_10151476441843742_1824094005_n.jpg

-take the slack out of the bar (pre-tensing the bar). this will help you avoid tearing your bicep, and they should be locked out tight..no bending. think of them as just cranes they just hold the weight nothing more

-hips ...Dunno why people start with low hip posistion. waste of time and energy. if your body wants to pull with higher hips. let it

Thanks for the advice Big John appreciate it.

I had my arms slightly bent as when I was doing this I had by elbow strain that's why I had my elbow strapped in the video. It hurt when locked out.

I did so deadlifts tonight with some powerlifters and got some advice on the initial part of the lift. I will give having my head neutral a go next time.

I did try a wider stance as Rxx mentioned but it felt un-natural for me. Managed to almost black out too.

Really want to get form sorted before I start trying to pull 200+. Managed to pull 180kgx4 today but form got really sloppy on the last two reps...

Will keep at it.

Good advice from everyone

Another angle is to check your technique as well - a few adjustments here and there can make a massive difference. I see a whole heap of people deadlift with incorrect bar path and don't make the adjustments needed to put the bar in the 'sweet spot'.

I feel 'us' powerlifters don't use vid analysis enough - where as 'us' weightlifters use vid analysis too much LOL. Just using my oly lifting technique and vid analysis, I deadlifted 295kg with 3 x dedicated deadlift sessions under my belt and a strained bicep

Derek Pomana = The perfect deadlifter in my books - physical build, arm length, starting position, bar path, speed, lock out = no weaknesses #TheMan

Can anyone on here tell me why people lift their arms above their head before deadlifting?

Well, if you're wearing a deadlift suit it rides the straps up so that you get more support from it. But guys that don't wear deadlift suits see that and think that it's some kind of magic move that adds 20kgs to their deadlift and copy it LOL.

I think it helps release some strain on my back from previous sets, kind of like stretching.

I got on to Clint Darden while looking through MKs log. He has some great, simple and effective advice re getting off the floor and sitting back. My 2 weak areas :pfft:
