Might sound like a dumb question but

I have to go in for a shoulder op as Im sure some of you will know by now, but instead of getting it done I have postponed and am going harder than ever in the gym..

Due to TRT im starting to put on some size and am getting good gains every time I train..

But I cant help but wonder, am I doing the right thing making the shoulder muscles bigger before the op?

Might sound like a dumb question but is it better for the muscles to be smaller before an op, or the bigger the better? Will it make a difference?

Obviously the bigger the muscle, when they cut it open the more damage will be done wont it? Creating more scar tissue??

Should I be laying off the weights and getting the op done first before putting on too much size????

any thoughts guys?

I don't see the point in building the muscle up, then having surgery and being out of action to recover and then loosing majority of the muscle from lack of use.

Wouldn't it be better to get surgery asap, then recover and start back in the gym once its back up to strength?

surgeon is very hard to contact. Only way to discuss anything is to make an appointment to go see him.

But I think you guys are right.. I should stop training and go get it sorted..

Im just enjoying training too much. I don't want to stop yet.

I cant help but wonder if it will ever tear..

Will it handle bigger weights. The doc reckons not! apparently I shouldn't be training at all.. But if he is wrong and it never tears off the bone then there should be no need for the op at all right?

Cant help myself.. Going to train until I have no choice..

I just hope Im not being stupid about this.. But I probably am lol

If you don't get it sorted properly then you'll be unable to train for a lot longer if it does give out... Personally I'd get it fixed so I could continue to train for years to come, however that's just my 2c.

it is unlikely your doc will refer you to a surgeon unless they genuinely believe there is a problem and this is all for your own good so take it easy just for a bit pal, get that surgery done you will be hitting the gym even better than before after this surgery.

docs can make mistakes and if you suspect he may be wrong then by all means get a second or third opinion in person from more docs but please don't go around forums asking whether you should keep going - randoms who haven't assessed you cannot diagnose your condition/aren't qualified to give you legit advice. we can encourage you and tell you "go for it mate, work hard keep going if it hasn't teared already after all this time you've been talking about it then its all G" but none of that will help you if it does fully fk up after a couple months, you might find you'll never be the same again at the point even after extensive recovery.

IMO, yes with all due respect this is a dumb question! you are putting short term satisfaction ahead of your long term priorities.

rxx is totally right, unless you're one of those YOLO guys then you are in this game for life, fit for life strong for life big for life right?

I thought there was no difference between getting it down before or after it tears off? No?

I know if it tears off there is aprox 2 month time frame to have it sorted, before it shrinks and cant be reattached to the same point..

Other than that I thought there would be no difference whether it tears right off or not.. Hmmm, I think I definitely need to go back and have a talk to the surgeon..

there are no if's or buts, it needs surgery. An MRI has shown the tendon is only hanging on by aprox 10%.

Way past the doctor stage.. Im dealing with a surgeon on this matter.

The problem is whether I'll complicate things by having it eventually tear right off the bone or whether I'll get away with long term training as is.

Been training in weights since 26, now 51 so yeah, in this for life.

The frustrating part is I found I had low test so was always struggling with my weights. Now Im on TRT Im finally loving the training and making really good gains for the first time for years.. Im dreading not training for months..

yeah yeah, I know I need to have it done but whats the harm in postponing it until I have no choice. That's what I cant help but wonder! Why do it now if Im training fine.. Apart from putting up with and ignoring pain and skipping certain exercises that aggravate it, Im currently making good gains..

If it tears off, I thought, no biggy, then just go ahead and get it done..

Maybe I do need to go back to the surgeon to disscuss this :-(

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. I think if it tears off, it's MUCH harder to reattach. :?

thanks Pseudonym,

I have made an appointment with my surgeon to discuss..

I think after talking to you guys, I better find out properly rather than guessing. If what you say is the case I would be silly to carry on training and make things much worse..

cheers guys.

Smart idea mate, get it fixed and enjoy being able to train properly without the shoulder restricting you. If you've been making good gains with a dodgy shoulder, imagine the gains you'll make ones it's fixed. :)

Let us know how you get on.

wooohoooooooo, surgeon said go for it.. let the pain in my shoulder be my guide and if it tears right off or gets too sore we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.. he said just don't go to heavy on the weights if I don't want it to tear right off the bone..

He said there is absolutely no need to rush in and have the op.. :D

On another note, its now too sore to train anyway - hurt it getting carried away during a boxing session.. Trying to keep up with the young guys, smashing the shit out of the bag showing I was just as tough and had just as much stamina as the young ones.. Bugger did that back fire.. The next day the pain kicked in..

Just hoping it will settle down..

yep stoked.. I cant push anything too heavy but I can push heavy enough to still add muscle and was still making good gains..

Just blew it on the boxing session the other day.. I knew to take it easy doing boxing bag work.. Dumb dumb dumb! Just hope it settles down now so I can go back to weights..

I want to do some before and after shots.. Got the before when I was weighing in a 115kg or there abouts.. Not pretty lol..

Hopefully my after shots will look a bit better when I finally post them.. :-)
