To old to train?

Hi all, I'm a newbie, what a great site!

I'm 56 and for 40 years I've thought about going to the gym.

I did go a few times. I did enjoy pushing the weights, but I think I over did it as I couldn't get out of bed for 2 days.

Now have more time... I want to give it a real go. Loose some weight, maybe get some shape to the body.... Can you still do this in your fifties?

Visited a couple of gyms, don't like those skinny kids in track pants, who might be fit, but no grunt - Don't think they would know what I wanted.

I would appreciate any recommendations. What's involved with a personal trainer? That's what I really need - what sort of money should one pay?

I'm in East Tamaki area.

Thanks for your time.

Peter

Hi Peter. Welcome.

Absolutely you can do this at any age. Just take it slow to start with, and ease in gently.

As for personal trainers, a lot of gyms include a few free PT sessions when you sign up (and if they don't, you can still try to negotiate them!). The PT you get is probably not going to be an expert, but they should be fine to get you started. Use them as the base, then supplement with your own research.

Never too old, mate. I regularly train with a guy who is 73 and still competing in powerlifting. He also trains an 80 year old guy in body weight exercises.

Just ease into it and maybe consult your physician if you're worried about it or have any health issues.

Absolutely you can improve Peter. I’m about to turn 51 and in the past 3 years have dropped from 20% bf to 12ish and added around 10kg of lean. Train heavy/low reps but be smart, listen to your body and look after your joints, and above all get your diet on point. Unfortunately our metabolisms aren’t what they used to be mate

Go hard mate, I am 54 and have just started to get back into training. The one thing you have to remember is that you should not listen or train like it says in magazines etc. I fell into the trap and have tried many various gurus ways and have fallen foul to these so called PT's etc. I was however lucky that a bloke in my gym came up to me and showed me the folly of training the way i was and I have never looked back.

Remember to take the first step and your mind will mobilize all its forces to your aid, and the first essential is that you begin, and ince that battle is started all that is within and without you will come to your assistance

Good luck with your journey

Go hard mate, my old man is in his mid-50s and I share the Powerlifting platform alongside him a few times a year (he still has a 6-pack, completely puts me to shame!). Plenty of other fellas that age and even older who compete around the country, it certainly is possible as long as you commit to it fully, and like a couple of the guys above said, listen to your body

All the best mate, welcome to the site :)
