Real Life Bodybuilding....Aotearoa 2013 Open Mens!

Here's one for the real NZ Bodybuilding enthusiasts (Instead of debating the current hot topics such as if I can have 2 shakes or 4, and if chocolate flavour will react with my 800mg of Tren on my first cycle, or what obscure AI made only in Eastern Mongolia I should be using! :pfft:  ).

Right, here it is, the big question for 2013!

Who are the contenders for best open mens bodybuilder in NZL in 2013?

Not interested in athletic / boardshorts or weight / age divisions (we can start a new thread for that). I'm not interested in political debates about federations, or bodybuilders that we know aren't competing this year (that could win if only they dieted! ).

So who's in contention in your opinions? Maybe give your top 5 regardless of federation?

Great topic! Will definitely help me learn more about the local/regional/national bbing scene.

My top (in no particular order): Sounds Good, Big Kiwi, Garth van de Merwe, Darren Onekawa and Moe Moussawi. Not sure who'd be the top though.

*please excuse any picks that are not applicable

Moe, Darren & BK are Pro's so unlikely to relinquish their IFBB status to compete in NZ shows. But definitely 3 top bodybuilders.

Unsure of Hamish's plans - I had heard strongman and powerlifting mentioned for 2013?

Garths a very good amateur too, definitely see him and Kenny up in nzifbb's overall lineup this year!

Disregarding the pro's...Steve Orton win would Nats open men and overalls of each federation hands down.

Steve makes my top 5 for sure, and would have been clear number 1 until yesterday....now I'm less certain!

Caught up with Mark Anderson for coffee yesterday - sitting at 100kg & 9% at 5'4" or whatever height he is. These two are both competing at this year, (but at different shows I understand?), so unfortunately we probably won't see an onstage comparison, though Steve's younger brother Kagan will no doubt be in the overall lineup next to Mark at the NABBA-WFF Nationals (from memory Steve is competing in Melbourne to qualify for Southern Hemispheres in GC, where him and Jake Nikopoulis will line up after Jake qualifies at Christchurch Grand Prix).

Does Moe Moussawi still compete?

I would say:

-Steve Orton

-Grant

-Hamish (if competes 2013)

-Moe (if he competes)

-Justin Rhys

Don't know many good NZ bodybuilding don't really follow the NZ scene.

Not a fan of Darrens physique

Top 5 seems pretty tough to call this early on, I'll cheat and say in no particular order these 10 are gonna be up there somewhere!

Steve Orton (NABBA-WFF)

Mark Anderson (NABBA-WFF)

Nathan O'Hearn (if he competes) (NZIFBB)

Darren Farrow (NABBA-WFF)

Kenny O'Malley (NZIFBB)

Kagan Orton (NABBA-WFF)

Garth van de Merwe (NZIFBB)

Alex Simays (NABBA-WFF)

Byron Peach (NZIFBB)

Grant Pieterse (if he competes) (NABBA-WFF / IFBB Pro / WBF Pro! ).

Honoured to be mentioned  we will see if I jump up on stage again this year, although after an extended break my fire is being ignited again..

Nabba wff overall - Steve Orton

Nabba NAC - Dianabol

IFBB - Kenny Omalley? Nathan O'Hearn? Android?

Other names to throw in the hat are Kagan, Alex, Mark, Marven, Darren, Nelly and Mateo

Garth and Byron have both publicly said they will be taking the year off

Moe doesn't compete anymore. Justin and Darryn O are both pro's so not really fair to compare them with the rest of the competitors.

We can't forget Grant in all of this. You receive an immediate 2 year ban for competing in another federation so assuming his Ifbb pro card was revoked last year for competing at the Nabba WFF pan Pacifics he no longer has a pro card and is free to compete again as an amateur. It's possible you will see him up against Steve at the nationals and I'm telling you guys first hand he's looking pretty good. Still got the great taper but bigger all over and brought his legs up. Can you imagine a lineup with Grant, Steve, Kagan, Alex, Darren and Mark!

Gonna be a good year :)

Is Grant not a WFF Pro?

Agree with you Grant has improved his physique a lot and has good lines and symmetry. His peaks are ridiculous! Looking at the recent picture of his back he has a few details to bring up IMO like trap thickness and lower back. But definitely thick and wide with good taper, especially in the offseason!

world fitness federation pro ... he's a little big boned for that lol

WBFF Pro offshoot - was talk of it happening - dont think it did though??? or may be still to happen. It was a discussion with Paul Dillet but I dont think it was for that particular fed.

I think Grant did compete at one of Paul's WBFF Pro shows just after the Pan Pacifics last year? Somewhere in Canada & placed 6th from memory?

But like any Pro in any Federation they could still rock up and compete in a NABBA-WFF and potentially a NABBA-NAC show?

I am surprised Joe Ulberg has not been mention and who recently competed at the Aussie pro show and the same other NZ pro's like Mike Kingsnorth.Yes that would be right Nate and I recall the show was held in Toronto.Steve Oraton would win easy at any Nats for any fed hands down including the men's overalls as well

Steve Orton has amazing muscularity but he has weird shape in my eyes. Doesn't look aesthetic.

I reckon Grant Pieterse looks fantastic going off his recent FB photos and seeing him irl while driving by his store.

Kenny O'Malley also looked sick as fuarrk from the pics I saw of him at the IFBB show.

And of course Soundsgood is just massive as fuark, wanna see him come in super shredded though.

I don't know about Steve winning "Easily" Gym Rat? as I think that is a big assumption as a stage full of 5 or 6 of the top amateurs would be very competitive, especially considering some of these guys might potentially be retired Pro's or NAC Universe winners?

I don't know if Nate was referring to just NZ Residents to as there are some phenomenal amateurs in Aussie too.

One of the interesting things in a top quality line up would be that they all have different shapes and structures and strengths/weaknesses. Lots of factors to figure in such as size, shape, proportions, symmetry, upper/lower balance, leaness/muscularity, colour , on stage confidence, posing etc.

It would be bloody hard to judge if everyone came in shape!

Also it's largely bout who can peak at the pre judge and who cant. Too hard to clearly pick one in my opinion without seeing who nails it on the day.

Also the judging would need to be carefully addressed to avoid any inferred bias, perhaps 3 from each Federation to avoid ties?

The one thing I think we can all agree on is that it would be a great event, probably the last time we saw this was the NZ Pro AM Grand Prix with Jamie Cameron, Daz and Nato in the Top 6.

Just my 2 cents.

Steves not doing Nationals - Kagan is he will win it easy and will win the Jnr universe title.

Don't know what all these posts are about BK & Moe etc get a grip.

My predictions are always correct.

So Kagan can easily beat Mark Anderson easily? Huge call by GF!

As an aside I'm hearing some big names for the Chch show GF? Both aussie & nz names.

The best ppl aren't gonna show up in their best condition at the same show unless their is something worthwhile to compete for, like money and a decent amount to get ppl out of bed.

Even that pro am, not everyone good competed in that.

Not gonna happen

That's just life.

Agreed Tom.

Just to be clear the topic wasn't supposed to be about an imaginary competition that could never happen. Its about who is actually likely to step on stage in nzl this year and how you'd rate them.

Where does nate fit into the equation?

Didn't want to get down to the bottom 50 physique men! :pfft:

Seriously bro, I'd be happy to be somewhere amongst the next tier down along with guys like yourself, Kristian, Geordie, Yoram, James, Matt, etc and those I know less about from NZIFBB.
