Looking to get involved in powerlifting.

Hi

I'm a 20 year old male student at Massey University Palmerston North and i have been contemplating getting involved in a sport for the past few months and am very keen to give Powerlifting a go. I was wondering if any of you know a trainer/instructor/ex lifter or ex bodybuilder (if you think i would be better suited to bodybuilding) that i can learn from?

If i manage to find an instructor/coach/experienced lifter i will put in 100% and am willing to train whenever (as long as it fits around my classes/study)

HJP and Jonno are great guys and will give you the no-bull story.

Height and weight are no impediment - at a recent Wellington novice comp, one of the lifters (admittedly a bit heavier) would have been around the same height.

In fact, if you can get down to Wellington on Saturday 27th April for the Central Districts Champs, you could see a lot of strong men and women in action.

You may actually already know or recognise Hayden, pretty sure he runs an exercise physiology lab at massey if you've taken any papers like that yet. As above, can't say enough nice things about the him and Jono :nod:

Hey

I'm going to meet with Matt Barnes next week in relation to powerlifting and on monday morning i have an appointment with Andrew Nicholls about swimming (mite start swimming instead, due to my body type however unsure atm)

In relation to powerlifting, today at the gym i was finding it really hard to hit weight i previously had for Deadlifts so just thought nothing of it and moved on to bent over rows(I do legs-push-pull). I have just been talking to a friend of mine who is around the same height and he suggested sumo deadlifts.

What you guys suggest?

Just try both and whatever one feels best or "clicks" with you then go with it.

Ps you can start out doing one and then swap, no rule says you have to do one or the other forver.

Plenty of lads started one way then swap cos they get bigger numbers then end up swapping back as they train weak points etc.

^Yep, agreed :nod: I've seen that calculation somewhere before but have never bothered. I was a conventional deadlifter all of my lifting life until a few months ago. Started the switch to Sumo because I wanted to take some strain off the back with the squat numbers I was putting through it (not because of a calculation or anything...) - my Sumo numbers pretty quickly reached, and then surpassed my conventional numbers.

Just give it a try for a little while and see which fits best. I'd suggest asking a few people who know how to do it (well) for tips, and I also found studying youtube vids to be helpful for cues.

Agree here also, it's really on ther persons personal preference. Shorter men and females tend to favour a sumo stance due to really short levers and small ROM and taller lean towards a conv stance but this is very generic.

Thinking of switching between the 2 for my next training cycle and will pick one towards the end of it and stick with that. So long as your coach/PT knows what they are doing you should be fine.

I tried sumo out during my leg workout today and it felt so much more natural.

I asked Eric Helms what he would recommend and he said a lot of their athletes do a semi sumo deadlift "just because they are better able to get their hips low keep a flat back and have a lower risk of injury, and longevity and consistency are by far the most important things in this sport."

Just sent Hayden an email asking him about some potential instructors/people to talk to in the area.

In the mean time i was just wondering about a couple of things:

-Whats a good training routine for a beginner powerlifter?

-Can i focus on some lifts over other? or does powerlifting require all 3? Reason i ask is i'm not a huge fan of squats (something i need some help on) as i find them to be very awkward (perhaps duo to my height/ long ass legs?). Therefore would rather focus on deadlifts.

-What would you suggest i do in terms of putting on size? (190cm, 86kg as of yesterday, quite lean at ~10-11%bf, 21 on sunday) as in what should i be aiming for, weight wise in the short term and long term for a first competition?

Alternate answers:

Good training routine - some say Sheiko #29, but talk to Hayden and Jonno.

No - you've got to do all three. Train the lifts and you get better.

Why size ? big ain't strong, only strong is strong. Powerlifting handicaps on what's known as the Wilks formula, so if two people lift the same, the lighter person wins. There's no magic number that says for height X, you should weigh Y kg...

Then... you offer to buy him lunch, or dinner, or breakfast. Not a bakery pie... like something that's going to cost you 20 bucks. If he drinks beer, make it a 12 pack.

Now that you've shown you appreciate his national championship-level experience, you can probably ask him whatever the heck you want for an hour or two.

Treat your jedi-master right. I still buy mine bottles of scotch or beer every 3 trainings or so. When I started out, it would be pretty much every session.
