Caffeine and Cortisol Secretion

I agree about the trial not being run over a long enough period of time...I would also like to see a much bigger trial group.

The other thing to consider is that cortisol is influenced by so many factors, and everyone's pattern is different. It's easy enough to generalize these things, thereby proclaiming that caffeine influences cortisol levels when, in fact, those other influences exist. Also, I don't see in the study where the researchers tested the subjects' cortisol levels when they had no caffeine in their diet at all to form a baseline.

Or maybe I'm missing something...

Cortisol isnt some nasty enemy I don't know why people vilify it so much. It helps your body deal with stressfull situations like a heavy training session. It helps your body break down glucose and fat for fuel and without it you'd be screwed. Its only chronic elevation of cortisol that is an issue and this only happens during continuous exposure to stress over a period of time.

Bodybuilders seem to think they'll suffer Cushings Syndrome with any elevation Riccardo! :pfft:

I remember when people started experimenting with Cytadren (Aminoglutethymide).......joint pain much!

Coffee can become such a crutch. I have a reasonbly stressful job and I used to smash the plunger coffee (4-5 cups of black a day). Had a bit of a bloods scare about a month ago and it turns out that plunger coffee can also increase cholesterol because it isn't filtered...and may even be responsible for some insulin resisitance. Even if it increases cortisol just a little bit you start seeing how a bit too much of a good thing starts turning your hormones against you. I'm starting to learn about this amazing word called "moderation", wish I had heard of it about 10 years ago but better late than never :)
