Protein Shake

Its just whey protein. Milk is composed of casein and whey. Whey protein is just Milk that has gone through a separation process and been spray dried. If he isn't lactose intolerant it will be fine.

Get that good nutrition in early I reckon!

not to be a critical asshat mate but if it was my 13 year old i would be using this time to engrave good eating habits (whole foods) in to him such as teaching him how to cook good stuff and/or preparing it for him yourself so you know hes meeting his macros for growth. he's so young, whey won't be bad for him but why bother spending more when he will get all he needs from his food

if you really wanna give him something to 'burn off' for the skate park then better just give him a glass of milk/milo or orange juice

If you can remember when you were 13 FellowshipOfTheRon you came home from school and ate what ever was available, a protein shake with banana blueberries weetbix whizzed together seems to be a pretty healthy option to me

yea can imagine he could be eating much worse than a protien shake, i know i was eating nothing but crap at that age!

every morning i get up and have a smoothie. cup of berry's, banana, whey, isolate. and i have to give my 2yo and 4yo a small cup each or other wise they go mental. can't see it doing them any harm.

don't get me wrong, i was not implying it was unhealthy at all. it's definitely a better snack than whatever random stuff one might pick up in the kitchen like coca cola and marshmallows. i was under the impression you were just going to randomly give him whey shakes but sounds like you are putting in more effort than that and providing him a more rounded out snack with the blueberries and weetbix mixed in. he will enjoy the taste and will help to keep him active while growing, good on you

He's just a active boy plays heaps of sports and after school/weekends spends most of his time at the skate park with his mates on scooters. So been letting him have a shake when ever he wants to keep him going

Which NZ Whey Protein brand is the best. I have always had ON, but it is so expensive down here!

I recommend sticking with ON 100% Whey, it's great quality and definitely worth the extra few $$.

Just search the web for the best prices.

What's wrong with quality of many of the NZ brands? Nutra-tech, Shotguns whey, DNA Nutrition, all NZ made and taste great. I really don't get how people justify paying so much more for ON when there's products just as good (arguably better) produced on our own soil, for a fraction of the cost.

I'm with Phedder... Eat-me and Metaphysics, both local plants, local vendors...

Sure, in the past I've tried all the brands from the magazines but at the end of the day I found that all I need is clean protein (or +carbs if you're looking for a mass-gainer, which OP clearly doesn't need for his son), a flavour and consistency I can live with, at a fair price. Added BCAAs or creatine.. meh!

Will added protein do them good... given how much meat, milk etc is probably in his diet probably no better than another source of calories for growth.

Hell if you cool with the cost of it i can't see any problems from a nutritional or social point of view. At 13 if he is exercising, with light weights or body weight exercises i'm sure his body will make use of the added calories for positive muscle synthesis.

In terms of "what is the best brand of protein" they are all pretty much the same. There are some obvious exceptions, however as i learned from an Endocrinologist the NZ made ones are regulated to some degree so are less likely to contain added crap (not that ON would but other cheap imported crap off online stores is quite likely to). Probably going to become more of an issue in the future when supplement companies take that extra step toward profits and replace some of the amine acids with non-essentials to retain the total protein concentration (not yet compulsory to list the amino acid profiles on supps, however mite see it happen to highlight the "good" from "bad" companies)
