What gets you motivated?

What is it that drives you in the gym? What are you thinking (consciously/subconsciously) to get yourself to put in that extra bit of effort?

There is a point to me asking these questions, but if I tell you now if might affect your answers. So humour me... What gets you motivated?

For me the extra effort is what it’s all about. Going to failure is pretty standard, but we know the business happens with those last few reps so it seems crazy to back off when you’ve done all the work to get to that point. One more rep, one at a time. I work to Dorian’s one-working-set principle, so let’s say that’s 4 reps past failure . At four exercises that 16 reps total. Big deal. A few seconds of pain to know when you leave the gym you’ve done absolutely everything you can. Personally, it’s the only thing in my life I can truly say I give 100%

Yesss nice work

Ok so what seriously gets me motivated is constantly one upping myself, and seeing how strong I can get. Realizing I am starting to 'inspire' (their words not mine) other women around me also helps throw me back in the gym when I'm feeling blah about my workouts.

Nice!

Ice Cream on my cheat day gets me motivated! Just kidding. For me it's a chemical thing... I look forward to the endorphin rush that is my next workout. It's kind of funny, given all the DOMS and occasional injuries I go through. A willing slave to the chemical addiction and torture!

Oh, and definitely what icecream said regarding 'inspiring' others.

Nelly's pretty massive aye. Not too much of a fan of the physique though, a bit too big and blocky. Just my opinion.

Saw some pics of him next to Phil Heath the other day, Phil's size and conditioning makes him look like a baby. :(

yeah I'm not going to judge his physique, but the size of some of his muscle groups is what astounds me. Hope he goes up on stage sometime this year
