Just want to add - half way up it looked from the side that John had paused. (You can make it off the vid). Most guys would give up and by all accounts - you could tell John was weighing it up - and then he sped up again ... it was truly a sight to see. All of the ausy guys had never seen a "round backer" pull a deadlift let alone grind against the physical limitations of his body. Mind over matter in full effect.

What is a round backer?

Someone who lifts almost all with their back as opposed to a good leg drive?

Or what? Excuse my ignorance

Nah it's a name no one outside PLing probably knows (and even then only a fraction would know it) so you're not being ignorant.

It comes from a technique of dropping the shoulders forward n down to shorten ROM in the deadlift, eccentuating the knuckle dragger look. Goes against everything a PT would tell you to do when deadlifting, and is potentially dangerous but can add serious poundage for some (kinda like dive bombing a squat to maximise recruitment via golgi tendon reflex).

John's structure (scoliosis?) makes him a super roundbacker, similar to former world champion Vince Anello below.

Pretty bang on there nate, cept its Kyphosis (rounding of the spine), years at school leaning forward on seats with bad posture and to much hard core gaming in my youth contributed to that, but switched it around to benefit my dead. looking at the pic of vince...it's basically 100% likeness to my style of pull.
