Lance Armstrong is a gc, it's just unfortunate that he got busted. If they were to award the Tour de France to the next cyclist who hasn't tested positive for a banned substance, they would be giving it to the 27th placed competitor lmao.

Agree lol.

Would have to say, "dont hate the player, hate the game"

He did what he had to do, and got paid quite well for it. Would you lie about doping for a shot at millions? I don't see why they are smashing him so hard for this. Its obvious most dont realise that a huge amount of pro athletes take PEDs. people just but hurt.

He did get a bit ruthless with taking people to court early on. That was a bit shit, and maybe brought on the attacks on him. But I still respect him as an athlete and as great leader in fundraising for cancer.

just a top athlete got caught, not worth kicking up a storm over.

EDIT: also, nice thread response lol

i loved armstrongs comment about the definition of cheating - having an advantage over his competition. And that he didnt see it as that due to it being a level playing field.

anotherwords hes saying " i was just doing what everyone else was doing"

LOL

theres no such thing as a level playing field in tested sports. unless all competitors are tested in the sport, and even then its naive to think someone wont try it on.

only true level playing field - untested sport.

i will add though... while i do not believe there are any clean sports, there is plenty of clean sportspeople around. there is a difference.

His job was to win races.

Using PEDs was required to perform his job.

Being open about using PEDs would cost him his job.

Many other people have the same job.

I've not seen the media nonsense surrounding this but have noticed people very angry about his use of PEDs and his lying about it. However those same people deny use of the same in their favourite sport. Apparently Lance was some sort of sneaky drug cheat looking for an unfair advantage.

It's all just noise.

You could read that as no one was cheating or alternatively that everyone was cheating.

Good riders that made the choice not to dope were cheated out of careers by those that did. Those that doped had an advantage, refer definition of cheat: Armstrong and all others = cheats.

Openly untested sports not viable. The lawsuits from athletes that get sick would be massive. NFL already having issues with ex players that have developed head injuries. Also pretty shit message to send to kids, if you want to play professional sport you have to take PEDS.

one thing that has been missed in all this is that he went pro at 15 or 16 years old. even at that age, and a bit older, his teammates were astonished at how quickly he recovered from brutal training rides that left the rest of them crippled the next day. no evidence any of them were doping back then. he studied cadence and old training logs, etc., to learn from the very best.

yes, the tops in the field were all cheating which makes the top level of the playing field quite level which still makes him pretty darn good, imho.

BUT, he financially ruined people -- successfully suing them for slander, etc. while it makes sense for him to deny, deny, deny, it's just plain evil to do what he did to those who were trying to expose the truth about the sport...and there's no regret. he is just pouting now because he can't ever do a triathlon...or a marathon...or anything competitive...ever.

something's wrong with that boy.

i agree that he is/was a cheat, and all the others that doped are cheats too. i also agree that clean riders were cheated out of possible successes by dopers.

i dont necessarily believe that openly untested sports arent viable - in fact i think that the term 'openly untested' means anything different to untested.

As for the kids, armstrongs messages are pretty shit ones to be sending kids - but its a bit of an embellishment to say his case shows that you need to cheat to suceed.

perhaps it highlights that actually, as much of a prick as he is, he passed all their tests and successfully won his court battles - the hard questions need to be asked about how he got away with so much, for so long and was still clean.
