Bodybuilding sponsorship and tax in NZ

Hi everyone, not sure is this is the right place for this post, but if anyone could help I'd appreciate it. I've googled it but would like clarification from anyone who knows...

In New Zealand, what are the tax rules and obligations for sporting sponsorship, gifts and donations given by individuals to support a person in their training?

The sponsorship / gifts / donations are provided to support training and are not an exchange for advertising / promotions or work of any type.

From what I've read, I think it would be classed as a gift and have no tax or duty as of October 2011. Cheers in advance to anyone who knows or can help me with the answer!
