What's Better

I'd say with rowing DB vs BB makes much less of a difference than benching or shoulder pressing as the weight is below the pivot point and not over top. The means you require less recruitment of support muscles to stabilise the weight before activating the primary/target muscles making the use of DBs less relevand. I would go with BB simpley because you enough weight to get good resistance where as DBs often dont go beyond 50. also the diameter of the dumbells mean you cant get the center of grib as close to your body. DB are best left towards the end of a workout to finsh the muscle off after your heavy primary movements. I normally do DB one arm at time to real stretch out the lats.

dumbbells are good when you can retract and squeeze your shoulders more than a barbell will let you.

You can physically only pull as far back as your mid-section gets in the way....I can get elbows further back and a good good Back squeeze happening with either dumbbells or especially with those unilateral row machines.

but barbell rows are good, prevents cheating some parts of the movement too.

I prefer barbell as it feels like I can activate my back better and it is hard not to rotate your mid section when doing DB rows if your trying to bring your elbow right back. When your rotating your mid section you and distributing the load over a larger group of muscles.
