How long to bulk and cut for?

Hey ive bulked for about 3months and decided to cut as I have gained a big gut with cellulite, and the forming of slightly pointy man boobs.

I've just started training from a 8 month break because of an injury and being sick and have noticed strength gains so far.

Do you think its a good idea to cut now?

How long do people generally cut and bulk for?

Take dannyjays advice man & cut, cut, cut.

Bulking can give birth to more fat cells, not just expand the ones you currently have.

Focus now, on learning as much as you can about nutrition. I would go so far as to say, nutrition is 80% of the equation.

Not true. The number of fat cells in your body remains constant throughout your adult life.

Ok well what happened was I got sick and became very underweight so I didnt mind intital fat gains.

I think I exaggerated with the man boobs. Just forget I said I have them cause I really dont its only once I looked in the mirror and saw some fat on my pecs near nipples that pointed to the side and was like WDF.

Ill take a pic so you guys can see.

Weight has increased by about 9kg since 2011 and have had to get bigger

clothes. Started training again this year around September 15th

Sorry for not good pictures :(

What do you think my body fat % is? before and after?

Can you see the dimples/cellulite on stomach?

So you recommend that I cut? Then slowly bulk?

 are you still on predisone?

to answer the original question "for how long...", there is no set timeframe to bulk or cut for unless you are planning on entering some kind of competitions or want to look a certain way at any certain time of year (tonedlean for summer).

if you just want to get bigger and are bulking, then cut back on the cals little by little when you notice yourself getting too fat for your liking and if that doesn't get you down quick enough then either add in some extra cardio to the routine and cut cals little more or just go on a short cut until you reach desired bodyfat %.

Yea still on prednisone almost on 20mg. How u know? Did you read my other posts?
I'm on 60mg for 8 days then probably be on 40mg then slowly tapering down. Probably by 5mg every 7 days. But been on 60-30mg for a month now already though.

You think i can still make gains at these doses? Or at least maintain the muscle I have? I think maybe ill be on it for atleast 1month maybe 1.5 months more and 2-3months all up TOTAL I would be on it.

Not taking any other stuff

Nope I think he just guessed :pfft:

yeah i liked what i saw so i stalked the post history for clues as to where you live

(not srs lol)

checked the post history because was wondering where i remembered your name from. have you talked to your doc about alternatives? if no other choice then don't beat yourself up over it, you don't really look that bad and from sounds of one of the other threads, you do have a general idea about how to work your diet.. part of this is likely out of your control. i remember when my dog had to go on a course of the stuff for an ear infection, wasn't even a long cycle but affected him kind of badly.

So based on the pitcures, I am still confused if I should bulk or cut.

Because I bulked a bit too fast should I cut down and drop the fat a bit and start again?

Or should I just slow bulk from now on wards?

I've just been getting back into training with 8 months off so I could make gains while cutting?

Its just the fatty roll stomach is getting big.

yea

if you lose weight 'too quickly' then you will burn more muscle

slower and steady is the best way to preserve muscle mass.

Can you give me some studies or evidence that supports your answer?

There is a limit to the amount of energy your stored bodyfat can provide per day. Say your maintenance calories were 3000/d, you can't just eat 500 calories per day and lose 2500 calories worth of bodyfat. It just doesn't work like that.

If I recall correctly, there's a few studies showing the limits on energy transfer from body fat, and I think it's around 69 calories per kilogram of body fat per day. So if you're a tub of lard with 50+kg of body fat, and you eat a restricted diet and exercise, pretty much the entire deficit you create will then come from your stored body fat. Hence the people on 'The Biggest Loser' can lose a heap of weight week in and week out, they've got a lot of fat to lose and their fat can provide them with plenty of energy. If you then look at a relatively lean individual, who lets say only has 10kg of body fat on them, the supposed maximum amount of energy they can get per day from their stored body fat is 10*69 so 690 calories. If they were eating at a 1000 calorie per day deficit, their body fat can only provide 690 of those calories, so the remaining 310 have to come from somewhere else, most likely muscle.

In short, fatties can eat bugger all and lose a lot of fat and maintain their muscle. Lean individuals have to be much more careful because they have less fat available to provide them with energy, and thus are more likely to lose muscle if they eat at a deficit too large for their fat to provide.

its not broscience bro, its scientific fact. also if your in too much of a deficit your weight training performance will suffer too. you need to keep lifting heavy and be hitting it in the weights room on a cut and let your body know you need to keep this muscle.
