Pacquiao v Marquez

He was released from hospital only this morning.

:pfft:

Unsure what part of a guy being in hospital overnight is funny...

I'm a big Pacman fan, but he has been trending downwards for a while (since peaking with his demolition of Hatton IMHO), not wholly surprised by the result. Was looking pretty good up until getting knocked out though (and I've read he was ahead on all Judge's scorecards), very entertaining fight  Looked like good class from Marquez to hold that last punch he had cocked, could've easily let that rip as part of the combo but he saw he was out.

With NZMM though, I think it might be time for Manny to throw in the towel.

He lost his previous fight on points and that was a VERY controversial decision.

He was winning this one right until the moment he got caught ... so what? Anybody can be knocked out...

It is not like Pacman has been loosing by knock outs after knockouts and getting beaten up in every round leading up to them...

A few months ago he was talked about as one of the best pound for pound boxers and now when lost two fights it is time for him to hang up the gloves .... ?

I am not even that much of a PacMan fan but people need to get a grip and not change their opinion every time the wind change...

To be fair, this has been creeping into my thinking across the past 4-5 of his fights. Although I was dirty on the decision loss to Bradley, it still didn't change my opinion that he has been on a decline - IMHO the "old" Manny would've finished him. Also, he was on the other side of what I thought at the time was a bad decision in the previous fight against Marquez.

As I say, I'm a big Manny fan and have been for a while, he just doesn't appear to be walking on water like he once did. I thought the way he played with Hatton showed he was the best boxer in the world at that time - Mayweather included - then pulverised Cotto in the next fight. But for me, in the 5ish fights since then he just hasn't quite hit that height again.

Either way, I hope I'm proven wrong about his decline, as I enjoy watching his bouts more than any other boxer when he is on form.

Just my opinion :)

How can you say he is washed up? Got knocked out with a punch he didn't see coming in a fantastic fight. Bit harsh I reckon.

Exactly what drizzt says. He's got too many distractions these days. Politics, family etc. He even cut his training camp short. The killer instinct seems to have disappeared. FMJ would murder him.

Marquez is an awesome fighter with a great record also.

It shouldn't be a huge shock that manny lost, someone had to and it had to be done convincingly. Manny was very aggressive and offensive and this time he was unlucky.

It was always going to be a close fight, that's why it could be promoted the way it was being the 4th bout between the two. Ppl want to see two great fighters going at it. A 5th one would get ppl just as excited if not more!

If manny had of knocked out Marquez ppl would be saying that's the end of Marquez, it's pretty ignorant.

Anyway ill definitely be paying ppv for mannys next fight.

Pacman is 33 which not considered to be over the hill for a professional fighter at all. I don't see a decline in hand speed (Arguably his is greatest asset!) or his ability to bridge distance, head movement or cardiovascular output... nor his ability to absorb punishment.

Time will tell...

That's the thing, none of that seems to be overly bad, and I agree his skillset doesn't seem to have dropped off at all.

Just, like NZMM said, the killer instinct seems to have left him. It doesn't appear as though he is as invested in the fights as he once was. He doesn't seem to command the ring like he used to - in the past, he could impose his style onto the other fighter and there wasn't a thing they could do about it. You can see glimpses of this ability here and there, but he can't sustain it for a whole fight like he used to be able to.

Maybe this is something he can get back (hopefully), but with the way it sounds like the other stuff is taking over his life, I'm not so sure...

As you say, time will tell.
