high protein low/zero carb jelly lollies

noticed the high protein content of plain unflavoured gelatin so whipped this up and it worked out pretty sweet!

1. put in small pot 100g gelatin, 1 packet weight watchers jelly

2. add 60ml boiling water so it makes a paste and put on low heat stirring quickly

3. once all lumps are gone and it looks smooth add around 2 tbsp thriftee (could probably avoid using the weight watchers jelly to make it cheaper and get all the flavour from the thriftee)

4. keep stirring for a couple of minutes then put it in a baking tin, i used 15cm diameter round one and it was like 8mm thick, shake it around a bit to flatten it

5. let cool then put in fridge for 20minutes until it sets

it should come out easy just slip a spoon under one of the edges, put on a cutting board and cut into small squares

closest i can compare the texture to is gummy bears, but much better macros

the 60ml water is not necessarily exact, iv done it a few times at close to 60ml and its come out slightly different texture each time, too little and theyre a bit too chewy.

for the whole tray:

320kcal

80g protein

<1g carb

<1g fat

So all the protein is gelatin?

yup i dont add any more.

edit lol i wondered if the protein from gelatin is any good, like can the body absorb it.. no idea but it disolves pretty quickly in water so i dont think its just gonna come out the other side without being absorbed but could be wrong

ah yeah you're right.

wikipedia: Although gelatin is 98-99% protein by dry weight, it has less nutritional value than many other complete protein sources. Gelatin is unusually high in the non-essential amino acids glycine and proline (i.e., those produced by the human body), while lacking certain essential amino acids (i.e., those not produced by the human body)

in any case, its low carb and tastes alright :P

Yeah man you should just make jelly with WPC tastes good!

Add you boiling water to the jelly crystals then add the protein with the cold water.

Or you can dissolve BCAA's in the jelly thats what I use to do as BCAA's are bitter as and hard to neck down especially because of the non-wet-ability of the powder.

Haha you guys. Gelatin for protein - the only incomplete animal protein. Why anyone would consider boiled down animal skin, tendons, ligaments, and hooves a source of protein is beyond me?

It lacks the essential amino acid tryptophan and is deficient in sulfur-containing amino acids so scores a whopping "0" on the BV scale. It's not protein - it's jelly.

"The amino acid composition of protein varies widely. Biological value (BV) reflects the similarity in amino acid composition of protein to that of animal tissues; thus, BV indicates what percentage of a dietary protein provides EAAs for the body. A perfect match is egg protein, with a value of 100. Animal proteins in milk and meat have a high BV (~90); proteins in cereal and vegetables have a lower BV (~40), and some derived proteins (eg, gelatin) have a BV of 0. The extent to which dietary proteins supply each other's missing amino acids (complementarity) determines the overall BV of the diet."

Who cares if its deficient in a few aminos and whoever said that this was a meal or that you should live of it lol? It's a low carb snack, a lolly alternative. Get off your high horse (and boil it up)

Pretty sure most people know this anyway. More like insane wikicopypasta than insane knowledge.... And how is extracting protein from bones and cartilage much different than extracting it from flesh or excretory glands regardless of aa content?

Bit testy there Diabolic? Hey, sure thing, if you want to think gelatin is a good source of protein for bodybuilding that's up to you. The post is called "high protein low/zero carb jelly lollies" - I was simply pointing out that it's not really protein and I don't want people factoring their desserts into their daily protein counts.

Unfortunately I don't read wikipedia sorry, but yeah I did copy and paste some of the above info (the stuff in quotes "") from the Merck website just in case you've heard of that site, mainly because it was easier to use their explanation than write my own one out.

And how is extracting protein from bones and cartilage much different than extracting it from flesh or excretory glands regardless of aa content?
For one thing gelatin isn't being manufactured as a high quality source of dietary protein. If they were manufacturing it to use in this fashion then they may be a little more particular about what goes into it and how it's extracted.

The only people that consider gelatin a source of protein suitable for healthy people are weight watchers, and sports supplement manufacturers that use it in protein bars for texture and to bump up the protein count.

If you're on the right sauce i guess protein is protein to some people so you could of course start living off marshmallows and sugar free jelly during your "mass" cycle. See how massive you get and then post up some pics to prove me wrong.

Never said it's a good protein for bodybuilding, I don't think anyone except you saw this as some kind of actual meal and I don't believe you don't read wikipedia.

Yes I've heard of the Merck website lol, I have a honours degree in pharmacology & physiology and have worked in the pharmaceutical information industry for the last 7 years. How about you?

Anyway I'm not testy lol I just don't know why you came in here blowing on about eating gelatin as a protein source and shooting the idea down when this is clearly just a lolly alternative.

oh shit so i shouldnt be eating gelitin and nothing else?? not srs lol but interesting about the quality of the protein in it, at what point are they allowed to list it as protein on the packet? any other common foods like this to watch out for(incomplete proteins or whatever)?

Haha sorry but I avoid it like the plague. I find too many people with degrees write shit on it that they know nothing about and put a little Phd next to their name to give it some weight.
