muscle/strength loss due to no lifting for 6 weeks

Recommended Posts

im going in for heart surgery next wednesday and the doctor has told me i will not be aloud to lift anything heavier then 5 pounds for the next 6 weeks so that means no lifting, no cardio, nothing. I've been doing weight training for around 2 years now and have got a good build for my age (16) , to the more older lifters out there you's are probably thinking im just some little gym faggot who does 3 sets of curls then spends the rest of the time looking in the mirror, but im not, i work my ass off at the gym (and at home nutrition wise) and hope to start competing next year, but im just worried about how much muscle i will lose due to no training for 6 weeks, or how low my strength will go down, im on benching 75kg for a good 4 sets of 6-8 reps and i cant squat my ass down to the ground on 100kg for a good 3 sets of 6-8 reps and i deadlift 105kgs 3 sets of 6-8 reps aswell, but i just need somebody to help me out with either - i will lose alot of muscle and strength or i will not lose alot of muscle and strength. i know taking time of the gym is good for muscle growth but thats like 1-2 weeks after every 4-6 weeks of training but how long is too long before you start losing muscle? do i have anything to worry about or should i just harden up and see what happens..

All the best for the surgery man.

About the loss over the 6 weeks ; this period is totally out of your control as per docs orders so don't waste your time worrying about muscle loss/fat gains.

If you are concerned that years of efforts will go down the drain in weeks then don't be! It's not as dramatic as it may seem and you will be able to recover reasonably quickly - you are still young after all.

Here, read about this so you can at least feel better about things : http://news.discovery.com/human/muscles ... ength.html

Muscles Remember Their Strength : Even if you take a break from the gym for a while, your muscles will retain a memory of their former fitness.

i broke my leg november 2011, when i got cast off 11weeks later exactly it was like i had no calf muscle whatsoever and thigh was about the same thickness as calf lol. cos i had been basically sitting on a couch for nearly 3 months.

once i was back walking let alone lifting the muscle came back unbelievably fast, maybe 3 months after i had cast off it was as if it had never happened, the muscle grew to match my left leg.

6 weeks you should be fine, muscle memory etc you will grow it back quick as.

All the best for your surgery, you get good gains when the doctors clears you to lift weights again. Your young plenty of energy concentrate on healing quickly study up on nutrition and training and before you know it you will be in the gym.
