I'm sick of reading that rubbish.

There should be a option on new website so u can block ppl who u think are dickheads, so u never see their posts.

if you don't like posts by certain users, add them to your 'foe' list (in the user control panel) and their posts will be ignored.

yeah i got the same inkling about the name, it's really immature to say but that name does sound rather fruity!

OK, well, I'm a bit puzzled as to what could be gay about it, but I'll take that on board! It might be something we can counter with the rest of the branding, for instance. I'll pass that on to the developers - we want to be neutral.

For what it's worth, Gymnation is a name that's had universally good feedback wherever I tested it (and believe me, I went through a load of names that got slammed! :pfft:) Most people have told me it neatly wraps up who we are, and what we all have in common. It works for novice to expert, casual to hardcore competitors. And it's unifying.

then again, they could easily use the same data model and just be themed differently (different brandname/banners) based on whether they typed nzbodybuilding.co.nz or gymnation.co.nz

As I understand it, Google and other search engines penalise you heavily if you try and duplicate the same content on different sites. The short answer is: it would kill our ranking on Google.

Ah good points with that re the Google rankings.

Regarding the name, it's probably a really good one but we are just being extra negative/judgmental about it because of emotional attachment to the NZBB name (no homo)

Why try to fix what aint broken :computer:

I hate to say it but this website is kind of broken mate.

When I first joined up several years back the forum had several IFBB pros and alot of the top amateurs were active posters on the forum. You had alot of great bodybuilding related topics debated thoroughly and there were actually quite a few female contributors too.

I'm not saying bodybuilding is all about actually competing but you can count the number of current competitors who are active posters on your hands. There's alot less relevant discussions regarding bodybuilding and where have all the females gone?

To be honest there's probably more power lifters on the forum than bodybuilders. So if there's no real drive to reintroduce a bodybuilding flavour to the forum then it's a bit misleading to continue with the bodybuilding tag. I'm not sold on gymnation, but at least it reflects the current nature of the forum a bit better

I do agree that the audience is kind of broken. Maybe I'm just selfish but I'd rather see a dedicated Bodybuilding website rather than one that caters for all the gym-goers. Most gym-goers I can't relate with at all.

I'd suggest that the information that the active bodybuilders were seeking back then is just much more available on the Internet these days. It's now "Google, and you'll find more than what you need". You've also got to factor in Facebook as a large factor in the decline. Now, it's easy as pie to network with fellow bodybuilders.

It's also possible that there's been a decline in the number of competitive Bodybuilders and the popularity of Bodybuilding in general?

i get what IDW is saying.

As a competitive bodybuilder there isn't alot of worth in posting questions here (hence I don't)

You get people who have never prepared or competed or worse have and were shit at it (trying to do their best I guess) giving their opinion on what to eat and what to train like. you have to hear stupid remarks from light-weights that meal timings don't matter, that you can eat less and still grow cos you're taking gear, or that you're eating too much protein or whatever. Oh and they constantly refer to research articles.

Don't take this the wrong way! I love to hear alternative ways of doing stuff, but it's spouted as advice from people who go to the gym for different reasons than myself and they've never practiced their advice for years to see if it "actually" works.

So I doubt Gymnation can cater to everyone all at the same website tbh.

I'd rather find a site for bodybuilders, real people who have gained size and know what it takes, have been there, stood on stage and didn't look like shit.

And when I'm done with Bodybuilding and move on to another pasttime I'll probably look for a site that caters to that.

Someone build a website and call it SportsNation.co.nz and cater to every sport ever played. See how the forum discussions go then...(it's not registered btw be in quick!)

Hence why there exists specialist sites like cycling forums to cater for...omg cyclists!

I have to agree Gym Nation sounds pretty homo (no discrimination)

I'd request you think about the name some more or put a poll out on a few different options.

Are you sure you want to combine bodybuilding with the rest of the sports?

I can imagine that's going to be a riot, with many different thoughts. With such a wide audience, I cant wait to see the steroid section lololol. It kinda sounds like LiveStrong.com with a forum focus. Just general health and fitness.

I support whatever you do, but gonna be very interesting.

No disrespect but for someone who obviously loves himself your an average bodybuilder and a below average power lifter so dunno why u think your too good to post questions or read others advice. Last time I read a thread where u argued with another poster posting scientific evidence u looked like a complete twat.

Your mate Harryb is a classic example of this too why thinks he knew best and that turned out to be a disaster.

U guys should stop being one eyed and narrow minded. Just because someone doesn't compete doesn't mean they don't know their stuff. Some of the best coaches and ppl who prepare athletes were never even athletes themselves.

lol if it ever ends up getting as mainstream as covering all kinds of athletes then either many users will leave (offended by presence of steroid section) or the steroid section will be removed entirely. wonder how people will react to that one :pfft:

The bicycle crowd of lawyers and other corporate wankers (and maybe you) will search for 'cycles' and find offense at the steroid forum.

Could this cause more trolling than ever?

Have a good weekend guys, I am off to cycle my creatine.

Hmm. It's a shame you guys didn't say anything when I announced Gymnation back in September. We've already started developing the new site now, but if you come up with the perfect name for us in the next couple of days, PM it to me.

As for who we attract... don't get me wrong - I don't want the site to be so generic that it loses its niche. We're not trying to be all things to all people. But certain gym "sports" have a huge amount of overlap. Powerlifters become bodybuilders (TomLeeGolf), bodybuilders try crossfit (Tomsammce), rugby players get in the gym and discover bodybuilding. And so on, and so on.

These are the types of people who already visit our site, despite the current bodybuilding label. All we're doing is changing to a label that better reflects who we are.

I don't think you'll find a sudden influx of "aimless" corporate gym goers, either. That's certainly not who I'm targeting - I want members who are motivated and training with a purpose. And that's self-fulfilling, because the unmotivated people aren't motivated enough to join the forum! :D

So that's the community aspect of things. But this needs to happen for purely commercial reasons too. Building the current version of this site was largely a fulltime job for me, and from memory it took me a good 6-12 months. I can't afford to do that any more, but the site still needs to develop. As someone said earlier, Facebook and other social networks are competing for our audience, so we need to offer some pretty big features that they can't.

Those features are all planned, but they're going to cost tens of thousands to develop. I'm funding the initial move to Gymnation, but I can't cover the development of all the extra features. For that, we need sponsorship.

As every event organiser will know, getting sponsors to support bodybuilding is near-impossible. The usual response is, "Bodybuilding? That's a bit weird, isn't it?!"

I've now taken our Gymnation proposal to a lot of very big companies, who would never consider being affiliated with bodybuilding. But they're much more receptive to the Gymnation brand. (Even though we're still the same audience!)

So, in a nutshell, because I'm aware this is straying into TLDR territory...

This rebrand means we can offer you new features, more giveaways and prizes from sponsors, and all of those good things that the site needs to keep growing.
