protein intake > drinking vs. eating

following on from the recent '1g protein per lb bodyweight' thread - and after reading this article (http://www.precisionnutrition.com/rr-whey-too-much) i wanted to ask a potentially right newbie question >> how much of a difference is there between eating protein compared to drinking protein? i admit to drinking far more protein (whey isolate) than eating from meat - for both convenience and financial reasons - and have never given thought to there being much difference. but as with anything in this game it really ain't that straight forward huh?

First, it’s pretty clear that you probably aren’t absorbing all the protein in your whey if you’re drinking it plain and in viscous (liquid) form. From this study (and others), it seems that under normal conditions, liquids rush through the GI tract too quickly and that only a small amount of protein can be absorbed during normal transit time.

From this study it’s also evident that higher doses of whey protein are better absorbed if you take digestive enzymes at the same time. When you do this, you get higher amino acid levels in your blood, so that you have more available to your muscles and other tissues, which is pretty much the whole point of drinking whey – to make amino acids available to your body

thoughts / advice anyone? could spend hours trawling through the www own this - but i like to hear opinions from those out there on the gym floors tbh

Love the imagery of the original article mentioned.

Drink WPI shake

*whoosh through the body*

BRB need to shit

Intuitively one can guess it doesn't work that way IRL.

How often does anyone consume WPI with water and an _entirely_ empty digestive tract?

If humans were that crap at absorbing non fibrous-bound nutrients would we even have survived? Actually I think we would however I wouldn't have. I get most of my macros from liquids and there is no way I could have a 10,000kg workload in the gym if I wasn't absorbing meaningful quantities of that.

Bluto reference.

It's just more fear/uncertainty/doubt inspiring nonsense best ignored. Carry on with what you know from experience to be true.

If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit.

Edit: foods-->nutrients

  • 3 months later...

In terms of body composition no difference in terms of hunger there's a ton.. Whey protein in the purest source of protein there is but most likely you'll be hunger about 1-3 later where as if you eat food it takes longer for you body to digest but hey whats every easiest for you to get then go for it will make no difference to fatloss/muscle gain
