What got you started?

As a new member, I am curious as to what got some people started on their body building/fitness lifestyle. Was it some zen moment? Did someone inspire you? Friend get you onto it?

For me I was at a party and went to use the bathroom. I used their scales as I hadn't been on any for ages and I was 137kg  I went and got back in the spa and said off hand how I thought I had put on a bit of weight. A (boozed) mate said "Mate, you've turned into a fat sh*t". Brutal, but exactly what I needed- now I'm 45kg lighter and kicking ass. \:D/

So what got you started?

Cheers

:D

A guy that I saw training at Auckland Uni gym when I first started. He was a small structured Indian guy same height as me. He was about 5'6" / 170cm tall, 90-100kg, with 18-19" arms.

He was in some of my classes and I became very good friends with him almost instantly, at first I always wanted to know how he got so damn big. I found out... super consistent full-on training, eating ALOT, creatine, and lots and lots of sleep. His life was basically Sleep, Workout, Xbox, repeat.

He was and is completely natural and never touched any performance enhancing stuff apart form some Ephedrine I once pushed on him (it was legal to buy back in the day on Bodybuilding.com).

Here's a pic of him around his peak: post-9322-1416682505653_thumb.jpg

His forearms were scary!

Phenomenal physique! Amazing genetics no doubt.

I just to be a 800 and 400 metre running competed a few times at Nationals in my late teens but was sick of being told how shinny I was by my mates one of which worked out.

I got him to show me the ropes and was hooked from then on.

was always typical stick figure indian, little insecure at times but didn't care too much. suddenly got super freaked out about one day though when i stood on a scale and saw i weighed only 40kg, eventually figured out it was a dodgy scale but it was the wakeup call i needed.

at the start i joined the gym with the idea to just build up some mass and leave after some months but my first workout was like love at first sight and goals shifted from 'get fat' to 'become ronnie coleman' just like that

biggest inspiration in the early days was from youtube, watching people like luimarco and tmw

Lol awesome. I love the old school wrestlers bro. Check out Bret Hart's book- it is at The Warehouse and is really good. That man still hates Sean Michaels.

I was always a gym bunny but didnt take it seriously till about a two years ago.

my mate and I were at the gym and I was giving a couple of gyms shit for practising there posing infront of the main mirror.. my mate said to me I beat you dont have the gutts to do that.. 4 months later I had learnt to pose and I competed in my first comp.

If it wasnt for the challenge I wouldnt have jumped on it :D

I got out of a controlling relationship and the creep turned even more psycho and wouldn't leave me alone. I started doing weights to get stronger....maybe in a way to feel like i could protect myself....and I found it very empowering and made me feel good about myself again. Am now hooked! \:D/

Started after martial arts/muay thai. I started because I was clearly overweight and that needed to change (my first revelation). Some years into it I was training to compete, and was worried about dropping weight staying lean. Did a little resistance with complete ignorance, and ended up just withering away.

Had a fight at like 65kgs (I was 6ft), felt weak, performed weak, looked shit, came out a draw, but in my mind I got a severe hiding.(2nd revelation) Never again did I want to feel that weak. Started researching more, learnt how to diet, training, and then just grew to love it as much if not more than martial arts itself. To me a big part of martial arts that I was neglecting.

Wouldn't go back, now its a massive form of enjoyment and escapism for me, its quite hard gaining more muscle mass and loosing more fat. That balance is an art and science, and is something you can always improve on, so there's always another level.

I was always a skinny kid growing up so when I was in my teens I started playing around with the weights my step dad had set up, he showed me a few things and I loved the pump I got in my muscles. But never took it too seriously. A few years later after a lot of partying with drugs and alcohol I did some damage to my brain effecting the serotonin gland resulting in anxiety, the doctor put me on meds and recommended I take up some form of exercise or going to the gym as it releases endorphins. So I joined a gym with a mate that already had a membership there and started buying bodybuilding mags and surfing the net on bodybuilding, I was hooked and have been ever since. :D
