Shrugging

When performing the shrug movement, what are peoples thoughts on what is the "right" way of doing it or good form so to speak. Ive done a bit of reading all over the place, some advocate the whole rolling motion where others stick with the "up & down" movement.

Thoughts.........

Don't even bother with shrugs unless Your traps are under developed. Gotta be the most queer exercise ever, next to dumb bell kick backs. Dead lift heavy instead.

lolwut

I know several bodybuilders who have a thickly developed upper body but crap looking traps make them look fail. A few heavy sets of shrugs are all they'd need every week.

Deadlifts, while good if done right... are not a staple in bodybuilding

Hence why I said only if you have under developed traps you should do them. Which you probably won't have if you dead lift heavy :P I understand that dead lifting is not a requirement to be a bodybuilder but why rob yourself of all dem gains and complete back development.

I've done f*ck all deadlifts and alot of shrugs, face pulls, upright rows and my trap development is fucking awesome....

You know you can't say that without posting a pic right :pfft: ? I have no doubt you probably have wicked trap development from doing all those exercises but I guarantee it would probably be just as good if not better by simply doing just one exercise, the dead lift.

good post

personally i think heavy rack pulls are better if ur goal is to hit traps as hard as possible.. but for complete back development like u say u def cant look past the deadlift

some inderesding opinions out there, makes a good read :D

Im with Dianabol & IDW on this one, i still like to keep shrugs in my routine, i usually hit traps on shoulder days. In saying this i dont dis regard any of the benefits deadlifting has on back/trap development, in fact i love doing them!

Again just a personal preference, i know DOMS is not necessary in terms muscle growth, but i do get em more from when i shrug opposed to deads. I suppose makes me feel better that im working them (traps) directly

as for shrugging only up and down , i don't think that's the right way because you are robbing yourself of a great deal of range of motion.

put your hands to the side and do the motion in the mirror - only up and down you might stop somewhere just above your chin.

go back and up at the same time and you can bring it way up to touch your ears.

when i come back down i make sure to go down the same way i went up because doing that weird rolling movement with heavier weights really hurts in a bad way

dunno how all the muscles here are linked though, just assuming that greater rom = better muscle recruitment = more potential gains

you're not alone

The traps are a long muscle, most of it isn't see in the mirror

the vertical up and down movement to me feels like it works just the part of the traps you see between shoulders and neck.

When I roll Shoulders backwards I can feel the traps behind my head squeezing together and yeah as Fellowship.... says you can get a different ROM.

I personally do vertical movement and then do incline shrugs lying forward so that I get the part of the trap that rotation hits. I dislike heavy weight and shoulder rotation exercises I can't seem to relax my Shoulders this way. But vertical and lying forward I can ignore Shoulders completely and just Shrug up and down. The difference is the up and down on the incline hits as much as the rotation method...I think, and I hope anyway.

I used to love the forward rotation and just let the weight pull you down and stretch the hell out of the muscle. But this can be achieved in the vertical exercise anyway there's no gain rotating forward that I can feel.

but that's just me
