Onehunga YMCA Gym Review

nemesis

Recommended Posts

Got some spare time and can't find anything on my new gym, so thought I'd waste 10 mins and write a review for anyone thinking of joining or researching gym options around the Onehunga area.

Location.

Just off Onehunga Mall, between Onehunga Mall and Selwyn St it's central and easy to get to from all directions with lots of parking close by. Having the police station close by (their car park is right next to the YMCA car park) means I don't feel too worried about leaving loose change in the cup holders compared to some gym parking lots.

Staff.

All the staff I have seen / met so far have been really friendly and more than happy to offer a spot and always greet me on arrival and/or farewell me as I leave. I regually see them putting weights back in their correct place and basically keeping the gym tidy.

Couple of the PT's workout often and always free to ask a question, offer some advice or my personal favorite (not that i know much) they don't tell you what you should be doing if you haven't asked.

Equipment.

They have a slightly limited range of equipment compared to what I was used to, but everything necessary for a full basic workout in my opinion. Hack Squat, 2 squat racks, 2 leg presses, smith machine, flat & inc bench, lying ham curl, quad ext, standing calf raise, 3 cable x over machines, assist pull up / dip machine, pec deck, and DB's upto I think 60kg or maybe 70kg.

I would like an old style power rack to do rack pulls and maybe a bit more weight on the cable x machine but I I can work around this and since the basic essentials are in place I'm more than happy with what's available here.

Atmosphere / training experiance

I've only been working out here for a couple of months but I've already been four times during "peak" times which is three times more than I did in 3 years of going to my old gym in Mt Roskill. Point being that my tollerance for doucebags is pretty low and there are alot less here than my old gym. Infact most people so far have been really focussed on there own training and less on what weight I'm lifting. lots of hello smiles and passing introductions. (I already know 9 peoples names already and that's 8 more than I knew in 3 years in Mt Roskill. Common theme developing here isn't there).

There is chalk lying around for those that want to use it and no fear of dropping your weight if you have to bail on db press, etc unlike some gyms.

Most people are polite, friendly and helpful and train with clear goals in mind. a few people throwing dumbells for no real reason  so a few of them are loose now. a couple people not wiping down benches after use :x and a few people either not putting plates back (ala that guy from The GC who was working out yesterday) or on the wrong rung of the rack. But I doubt you will ever totally escape this phenomenom wherever you go? at least not without legalising civilian use of tazers :pfft:

Overall it's a good gym with a decent amount of weights, equipment and good people, both training and working there.

hate the fact I have to walk upstairs to leave after I'm finished doing squats. Lucky they have a strong handrail. :shifty:

But probably worse to walk downstairs with jelly legs than up I guess?

probably missed a bunch of good / useful info but losing blood glucose and need food.

any questions feel free to ask.

you a fan are ya Tom?

Don't actually know to be honest, as I never saw the show, but recognised him from the ad campaign they ran before the show. had a bunch of nice tattoos which is why I noticed him.

Na bro I was always working at the gym on a wed night when it was on.

Good review mate... This guy wants to win the protein lol

Haha in my book that's you exposed for even knowing what night it was on :naughty:

Is there a prize for writing reviews? Maybe I should write another one about my old gym to double me chances.....

  • 4 weeks later...
I went there a couple of times when I moved into the area and settled on a different gym as their range of equipment was far too limited. The fact that they only have two benches was a bit of a show stopper.

they have 1 incline barbell and 1 flat barbell bench. plenty of benches for dumbells. the place is usually pretty quiet, not sure why you would complain about wanting more benches? lol

Yay! I won post of the month! (a month ago and forgot cos I saw the notification while half asleep) But yay anyway!

sorry big1 I ain't too sure about yearly fee but I got a good deal on their club card where I can train at any ymca with my onehunga card.

give them a call, they're friendly enough and can tell you everything you wanna know I'm sure.

yeah as for the number of benches, I only need one at a time and it ain't that busy so there's never much of a wait.

compared to another gym in the area that has TONS of equipment but also tons of douche bags. I know which I prefer!
