Bodybuilding Kills Social life?

Jimmy Bro,

Some guys and girls drink a bit of grog and still make great gains, I suppose it a case of if you have good genes and a good base, then you can probably get away with more of this than someone who still has a lot of growing to do.

If you tick off all your workouts during the week, get plenty of rest and still get enough planned calories in you can minimize the damage and recover, especially at your age.

For Example (from his posts) Weener Lad drinks a bit of piss in the weekends but comp time must really knuckle down and I guarentee doesnt cheat on his pre comp diet. Still seems to have made great progress.

Personally, I dont miss regular boozing now in my mid 30's BUT if someone had said no booze throughout my 20's I wouldnt have been prepared to sacrifice all the great times with friends in town/on holiday/New Years etc.Playing Northern League Football meant Jug or Double Jug Towers most home games! then town till closing.

This has defiantley meant that I have years of extra training to do to present the look I want to achieve onstage and I understand that. Now I am older I can concentrate more on my training as I dont miss the heavy boozing as much.Still tie one on occasionally at Weddings/Stag Do's and New Years though!

Thats the great thing about Bodybuilding, you can pick it up later in life and still make great gains and enjoy the discipline of the life style, you dont have to miss out on fun with your mates as long as you are realistic about how fast and how far you wish to progress. Its still nice to have friends outside of Body Building that can talk about other things rather than their 10 RM Bench!

Arnold defintaley got well boozed in his day, but come comp time, early nights, no missed meals ALL BUSINESS.

At your age you probably have a choice: If winning National Titles and perhaps competing overseas is your main goal, then a laser like focus is generally a must but be prepared to make some HUGE sacrifices and then not drinking too much at all would IMO be a good bet, however if you are happy just training hard, making progress and partying a bit in the weekends of season, I dont see the problem. Either way,the worst thing you can do is look back when you are older and regret either not being 1000% percent focused on BBuilding or that you missed out on alot of life experiences with friends.

One word of advice is that very few young guys love bobybuilding enough to give up everything for long enough to win titles, these are usually the guys who fit on the extreme ends of the Bell Curve, certainly not for everyone but if you look at some of the more successful athletes (WOODS, SCHUMACHER, ARMSTRONG etc) when they were dominating thier sports they were very single minded but gave up alot to get that good.

You're always going to have difficulty trying to maintain social commitments and maintain a healthy lifestyle - you don't realise just how many social obligations there are to trash your body until you focus on looking after it. Friday afternoon drinks at work, friends having parties, friends having BBQ's, partner wants to spend the night at home watching movies and eat lollies, suppliers at work put on a beer & pizza night etc. In all of these things it is considered rude to not eat the high carb / low protein food and drink the booze.

I personally have never had much tolerance for alcohol and have a couple of glasses perhaps once every six months. As for eating rubbish? It's a sliding scale with social circles at one end, and the physique you want at the other (with few mates and probably no partner); it's up to you where you want to sit on that scale and what your priorities are in life.
