What the masters student said about isolate holds some truth, too much desensitizes the amino acid transporters in your gut and your muscle cells meaning that you end up absorbing much less. However this only happens when you take isolate multiple times a day. I also read that super fast absorbing proteins can actually shift you into a negative nitrogen balance through a number of mechanisms involving insulin and gluconeogenesis but I don't know how much truth there actually is to those claims.

I personally don't see much need for whey isolate unless you have a specific need for it. A good quality WPC works fine for most people. Or better yet, actual food.
