lactic acid

I was doing my strength training and my WOD this morning and the lactic acid came to play. Strength was 5 sets of 3x 1.1.1 back squats (final set 120kgs PR) and my WOD this morning was 5 sets of 10xpowerclean (60kgs) and 10x body weight dips. I managed to complete my WOD in 10mins,

But every time that I was setting up for my powercleans I was starting to feel that burn then when I hit the 5 rep mark, well f*#k me it burnt but I kept going. My legs still hurt but I know that it is growth.

Any ideas to help with the burn or is it just a mind over matter thing, which is what I had to do this morning.

A few things you could try:

1- Eat bananas or other foods high in potassium and electrolytes. The carbohydrates in the bananas help provide energy during the workout, the potassium helps prevent a buildup of lactic acid.

2 - Stay hydrated during the workout by drinking plenty of water. Proper hydration allows your body to remove the lactic acid from the muscles during and after the workout.

Some people would also suggest sodium bicarbonate aka baking soda to "buffer the acids" but this may upset your stomach and potential buffer the acids in your stomach significantly making you stomach ineffective at breaking down food. It's acidic for a reason!

I think (and hopefully someone can back me up here) that after you've trained this way for a while, your body actually produces less lactic acid for the same exercise. ...Or maybe you just get used to it!

I don't think you'd be producing less lactic acid, as it's a product of glycolysis so will always be present during exercise. However your body should adapt and increase its buffering capacity, becoming better at clearing the hydrogen ions which would give the assumption of less lactic acid in the first place.

There's actually a lot of misconception about lactic acid, there's nothing wrong with lactate at all and it's actually a very important fuel during exercise. It's the H+ ions when lactic acid dissociates that causes the burning sensation and other issues during exercise.

I'm a bit of a sado who it comes to the pain, I don't mind it. But its when I'm in the middle of my WOD and I'm setting up getting ready for another lift and the burning almost makes me want to fall over. I handle the jandle cause I know that its part of the game. Its just a pain in the ass when I'm in the groove of things and I just want to collapse. Anyways thanks for the advise. Remember to train hard and drink, summer coming and we all want the summer bod.
