Changing It Up

When you guys go to the gym do you change the way you do a certain body part? If you did barbell curls one workout would you say do DB curls for the next keeping the body guessing and the same for other muscle groups??

If you change it up every workout you'll have no basis upon which to judge whether you're making progress or not.

I'd suggest changing it up every 4-8 weeks, the criteria you should use to decide whether to change it up or not are:

1. Not making progress towards your goals such as strength, size, or appearance

2. Getting bored with your current exercise routine.

^STRONG THIS

Plus: 3. any injury or niggle picked up during the training block

I mainly use 4-week blocks for my training, and switch it to 6-weeks in the off season. I feel these 4-6 weeks works for me as I'm able to make numerous small changes to my programme(s) over the year with out stalling, but still get the gains from consistent training.

I read somewhere changing your workout routine to often isn't beneficial as your body is continually adapting and isn't having the opportunity to progress at a particular exercise (get stronger).

Once you hit a plateau in terms of strength then you need to make changes, even then I would change the exercise particularly if it's a compound like deadlift I would rather change the volume of the training.

However if it's an isolation exercise such as tricep kick backs I would change the exercise.
