Too reliant on suppys?

Do supplements play a crucial part in training, wether it be loading on or weight loss? If so what's a recommended protein (whey) brand that's affordable and has an all round rate for a "serious" trainer? I am curious as a lot of people have recommended a few but I'm open to opinions and suggestions :)

This could go on but leave comments about recommendations for pre, post n creatine. Much appreciated! 8)

There are only two supps i beleive in 100%

Whey protein and Creatine monohydrate

If yr looking for whey ,dont fall for the fancy brands they preety much are screwing All of us when it comes to money, i look for the cheapest with a decent taste and a decent reputation, i always look the percentage of protein per scoop 69gms per 100 gms of whey and abaove is a good place to start.

Venom, nutrawhey, puretein are some o the cheaper ones but still have an excellent profile,

If you have the bucks and are after taste , dymatize, optimum nutrition, balance .. Taste preety good.

As far as creatine is concerned , i go for anything that is creapure certified , i buy just plain creatine monohydrate, dont fall for the fancy creatine drinks like size on and God knows what else coz they are just mixing creatine with sugar.

As far as the other creatine types are corncened u have to remember none of the have been proven to be more or less effective than creatine monohydrate.

Pre workouts are all the same imho , propreitary blend of creatine, caffeine, taurine and other shit stuff that doesnt do shit it's there just to wake me up.

Yeah I agree, protein powders and creatine are the bread and butter of supps, most are just offshoots of this. Even PWO blends are just creatine, with some stims and some other things like b alanine anyway.

Recovery supps should be the first thing you add into the mix.

a lot of people will also argue the benefits of whey protein isolate, or more specifically casein protein - they are indeed superior proteins that are released more slowly, but at the end of the day you have to ask yourself - am I an elite athlete competing on a national level that ACTUALLY needs to pay attention to this stuff, or am I just having fun getting into shape and am happy to buy whey protein concentrate?

Personally I fall into the second catagory and save heaps of money because of it

milk protein concentrate/isolate

best of both worlds

naturally 80%casein and 20%whey

stuff like super quad and myofusion are good for this fact, and some good info showing casein as a powerful supplement, main benefit of whey is its ability to maximise protein synthesis in one go or pulse, so something like inner armor gives you free from bcaa's for MPS and then longer release proteins. There's a few good mixes out there, with fast and slow digesting proteins. Inner armor is cheap but the taste is farking strong.

Here's a semi relevant study, some fat cops dieting.(huhu)

Strength and LBM was better in the casein group.

Moral of the story: don't eat just whey lol, real slow digesting meats and proteins are key, casein is aaaaight too :B

I found that too with the chocolate flavour especially, just need to add more water and shake the crap out of it coz its pretty thick too. found it weird tasting when I first started but a few days later it started tasting so good its now like a treat

WPC and canned fish.

WPI is expensive, and obviously good for lactose intolerant people, but many WPC brands are adding lactase and other digestive enzymes now to help counter the negs for us. So the good protein got cheaper, and still has all the goodies.

Forget the mass gainers. overpriced, while taking advantage of ignorance.

Add bananas and icecream to WPC for mass gaining awesomeness (and fart if you're enemy is lactose).

Agree whey and creatine are the staples. But I am also a fan of the pre-workout. They have boosted my workouts to a new level. I guess I am getting old and need a little extra to kick start my gym sessions, but they work for me.

I'm the same, I find it hard to get enthusiastic about working out without it
