What weights do most people reach for the straps and belts of their deads? I would be interested as I need to get some straps as my grip is limited to about 180kgs at the moment. Using no belt but strict form.

There's no reason not to use a belt bro once you get up to about 160+.

Using straps is fine if you don't do Powerlifting comps where they aren't allowed but still seen a a bit of a bitch move :pfft:

Personally I got up to doing 200x12 on Deads before I started using a belt, had no reason for this it was just how it worked out. Haven't used straps on Deadlifts though, just man up, your grip shouldn't be a problem till you start handling weights upwards of 300kg really..

this...to a point. personally i detest straps, if you have a weak grip, train without straps. train with a fatter bar, I for one never have issues with my grip pulling anything over 300+

straps for asisst work lats and rows

I use a belt from 100kgs on deadlift and squat makes it feel light as haha na I also do it to add support and if the weights feel light from the start then it ant guna fuk with your head when you go 300+ .

Bro I use straps now and then who cares hahaha just do some heavy arse Rack pulls with out them to work on your grip :pfft:

Depends if you're a bodybuilder or competitive power lifter.

I use straps on everything over 4pps because I'm trying to work my back, not my grip. My forearms haven't suffered at all so you can throw ther argument out. I use them for pull-ups too, get an extra couple of reps, the ones that make the difference whether you develop your back or it stays the same. There is nothing 'unmanly' about using straps.

If your back exercises are being hindered by your weak grip then of course use straps it is dumb to sacrifice back which is a huge muscle group for your forearms.

Grip strength gets developed quickly and you don't even need to train ur specifically imo.

I don't use straps now, mostly because I can't be bothered and I prefer not to. but I used to all the time abs my grip didn't stay the same. Now if I was to try DL 300kg it wouldn't be my grip that would stop me from lifting it.

Goes to show..

Just mentioning this as nobody has yet. There are other ways to increase the weight you can grip without straps. If you're currently using a double overhand grip, changing one hand to an underhand will make a world of difference as the bar wont roll in your hands. Also if you are not already using chalk, I would make an effort to acquire some as by the time you get to your top sets and warmed up, your palms will likely be sweaty not to mention the grease on the bar. Chalk is awesome for grip, just make sure you dont spill it everywhere or your gym will ban it.

I am horrified to hear some gyms ban chalk? Isn't that like KFC discontinuing chicken?

This.

Specific grip training is a waste of productive time. It's been said before, your grip will fail before your lats. So if you are training your lats why would you not use straps? That would be gym dumb.

What is bullshit?

Bodybuilders might have a different view.

Strong 3 posts..

Dunno about you mate but my Deadlift is coming closer to 300kg (will knock it out once the end of the year rolls around) and still haven't had my grip give me any problems.. Have also done a lot of high rep Deads (200x12, 210x10, 227.5x8 etc) and still grip hasn't held me back on any of these..

Use straps by all means if you're just trying to work your back and your grip is a limiting factor, I just don't see how it would be..

Went and got some straps. Was stuck at 180kg with mixed grip as I have short fingers and have dodgy right hand due to surgery. Pulled 200kg today with straps so am going to continue using them.

I have been working on grip strength for some time now but there really hasnt been an easy fix for my issues.

Thanks for the input and appreciate the time some have taken to provide reasons for and against.

PS my gym doesnt allow chalk so that was not an option either.

Good result bro. Nothing wrong with using straps at all. If you don't have chalk then you will need to use straps in any case. I couldn't do 180 without chalk.

Reminds me of a quote:

Crap gyms ban chalk

Average gyms allow chalk

Great gyms provide chalk

No chalk is a different story.. Definitely go for straps then bro, which you have and well done on the PB, good pull.

And just for all the jimmies I russelled, I use straps on all my Pulldowns, Rows etc, just not Deadlifts cos I just grab and pull :shifty:

im the same bro, esp on those higher rep ranges 10-20. the straps come in handy..deadlifts are 100% roundback no straps
