Which supplements?

What supplements do you guys take?

When I first started lifting weights, I took whey concentrate, creatine, glutamine, ZMA and multivitamins. After a few months I dropped all the other supplements and was only taking whey protein and started up creatine again.

For the last few months though, I haven't been taking any supplements not even whey protein and gains have been slow. Main reason is that I thought supplements weren't necessary as long as diet was reasonable and they were too expensive for the small help they did give.

Are there any of you that have made good gains without supplementing your diet?

dude, BCAA are cheap if bought in powder form. You pay like 3x the price for caps.

Nutratech have 300gm (100 3g doses) for $31.

I have stopped the WPI for a while, as it was getting expensive (even with family working in a supplement store).

I am back on BCAA and doing like 8-10g a day.

Gear ends up cheaper than whey, too, when you view the longitudinal span of the price vs distance.

agree with you man. currently right down to the basics ; wpc/cheap-ish blends+creatine+vitamins+fish oil. probably could do without the vits too but feels as though i get sick less often on them so staying on just for the peace of mind at least. currently also got a bunch of PWO left from some sales before so will keep using until they're gone but i think when these are out i'll try out just coffee for a while see how that goes.

i'd say your gains are probably slow for a reason other than the cutdown of supps, you made some respectable gains as we saw in that progress thread and i noticed you are very lean. do you try to stay this lean all year round? maybe consider a slightly 'bulkier' bulk (not dream bulk) or even give yourself a break for a week if haven't already before starting back up again.

keep in mind BCAA taste nasty as f*ck so get something to mask the taste

Please don't share your solution to that problem...

I just shake the shit up in water (though it doesn't mix well) and drink it like that. Makes sure I am drining tons of water too. Win-win.

After drinking CEE back in the day, anything is good to go. That shit was nasty bitter.

FOTR, Im not trying to stay lean. Im trying to bulk so staying lean is the last thing on my mind. I just havnt been eating enough.

Thanks for the replies. I still have a tub of creatine so might jump back on it. I used to take my supps all at once, glutamine, creatine, fish oil caps and whey mixed in milk post workout.

Is that a good idea? Its convenient at least

Off season when food is unrestricted:

* Multi x1

* Vit C approx 1000mg

* WPC

* Joint formula

* Fish Oils x 4

* Creatine cycle on ocassion.

Pre Comp when food is restricted:

* Multi x2

* Vit C approx 5000mg

* WPC

* WPI

* Casein

* Joint formula

* Fish Oils x 6

* ZMA

* Glutamine / Dextrose (or BCAA sometimes, when feeling poor! :grin: )

* Thermo's of many descriptions x lots LOL :pfft:

* Pre-workouts (again all types, enjoying K-OS at the moment)

* Probably a bunch of other shit my carb depleted ass cant remember.... :pfft: :grin:

Just my humble bro science opinion but when you're in calorie surplus you don't need to add a lot or get too fancy. When you're trying to drop fat and hold onto whatever muscle you can, you spend the money and try and cover your bases! :)

I mix bcaa with my pre workout,it is nasty as hell!!

After tasting the simple powder form once, I would never stray from Xtend in order to get my BCAA fix again. Watermelon flavour is where its at :nod: Tastes incredibly refreshing, and dissolves nicely, too.

I kind of sporadically supplement. Protein powder intake varies from week to week, some weeks I won't have any at all, some it will be at least once a day. Not saying this is good or bad, probably more bad than good... heh.

Creatine I end up taking in a 4ish week block once every 4-5 months. DAA is a good one which I must get back onto soon.

Otherwise the main constants are - as mentioned above - Xtend for BCAAs, Fish Oil, B vitamins, C vitamins, ZMA (when I can afford it!) and a little extra magnesium.

I just eat lots of meat and veg and consider myself supplemented.

I would be a lot more regimented in my supplementation if I had some sort of eating plan that I followed... but I don't :shifty:

For the past 2 months or so was just on BCAA's Extend as Drizzt mentioned tastes amazing and protein post WO. Weight still managed to get up to 107kgs at peak then down to 104 come comp time, atm moar 104-103 not using anything while I'm not training.

Though in my peak of supplimenting would be:

Fish oil caps

ZMA

Brotein

BCAA's

Creatine like once a year if i'm doing a mongrel program.

Did the trick less is more for me, all about the cals as a true PL should be.

":3lt074ra]

also lift heavier weights for more reps. for example your 1rm is 92.5kg. so you just up the weight, chuck say 100kg on and then do like 10 reps of that instead of 1 rep of 92.5. if you do this you will be stronger. hope this helps

Thanks, I shall start doing half reps.

I surprised at how many people take BCAAs. like Azide said i thought protein powder is supposed to have them anyway?

Tom have you been getting enough protein in your diet without using protein powder?

And have you been eating the same amount of calories for a while now?

I try and make sure I get a lot of protin in my diet. Id have about ten eggs aday and some meat. Id guess roughly about 100-150g of protein in my daily diet without protein powder

Im probably eatin less calories atm since im only having 3 or 4 meals a day where i stuff myself but i used to have at least 6. I know Im not eating enough, thats the main reason im not gaining. Still curious to know your guys view on supps though.

The only reason i'm supplementing with BCAA's is because i'm dieting. The BCAA's during the workout seem to help me recover better. Also gives me good vascular but that's because of the L-Citrulline in the product and makes water taste awesome and easy to drink without the cals.

Wouldn't bother with aminos if I wasn't cutting..

Cutting right now I take extend, multi vit, 3gm vit c.

That's about it. No protein powder for 2 months now and my body is thanking me for it.

Waaaa no protein powder, explain? that must be a fark load of protein from food sources then huh.

Interdasting development.
