Men's Physique Class...

Saw some pics of this recently. Guys on a body building stage wearing board shorts?! Seems very odd to me. Should a mans 'physique' not also be judged on legs rather than just an upper body, why the long board shorts?

It's more for a beach boy surfer look to get more asses in seats

Like Tomsammace alluded to in the other thread there is a huge untapped market here and alot of money to be made. The number of these young guys who just want an "aesthetic" build (decent sized chest and arm with a 6 pack and no legs) outnumbers bodybuilders, powerlifters, crossfitters, put together. And if one of them wants to get up on stage and compete a huge number of his mates will come along to support him, thus making the show a success. These young guys are often still living at home and have no real financial outgoings (mortgage, family etc) and so have alot of disposable income to spend on supplements, gym memberships etc. Because of this dont be surprised if you see more and more of these type of shows being run.

Fair call! I guess if it brings in the revenue then why wouldn't you run the class. I suppose the other part is if they like competing then they might decide to carry on and compete in the classic bodybuilder classes.

I just find a decent set of legs to be a key attribute of any physique! But each to his own

i agree, even if to me it seems pretty retarded to not want legs that at least match your upper body, its worthwhile if it gets people in the gym that otherwise wouldnt be

I don't think it's getting more people in the gym. The gym has always been stacked with guys who lack work ethic and therefore don't train legs. The class is getting these guys on stage.

Yeah I agree, I cant stand seeing guys with huge upper bodies and tiny legs, its just not right.

its a class for those who don't want to look like a freaky bodybuilder...simple as that. not everyone wants to be huge some people want to be pleasing to the eye of every day people..no legs are not judged although calves come into play as a last resort if its extremely close. a lot of the guys who did mens physique would dworf a lot of the bodybuilders upper body wise in NZ, they are not small! also some guys do the class to get their feet wet to compete in bodybuilding later on. i dont see why people have issues with this class its obviously very popular with over 25 competitors so far in 2 shows. its no coincedence the NZIFBB auckland night show had over 500 spectators

Well said. The issue people have is obvious- it is not purist bodybuilding. But it is the way forward it seems in terms of attracting competitors and spectators. It possibly has more appeal than novice classes where competitors often look like they have been on a hunger strike.

It's a pretty obvious move to pull in more of the aesthetic crew suckers.

For most of us here a good set of legs is mandatory to complete a 'proper' physique.

From their point of view, they only lift for the girls, period! ( :pfft: ) It's not for personal reasons like most of us so you gotta think, if you were lifting for somene else,... what kind of people do you expect to impress with huge legs? Guys. Their target audience won't even look down past the abs so no point to train them. Squat 200kg ATG for reps as much as you want but if you don't sport the 6 pack then she will be all like "are you sure you go to the gym? do you even lift?"

your missing the point completely...just because someone wants to have a good chest popping delts and a good set of abs doesnt mean they are doing it for girls its just the way they want to look, simple. a lot of "bodybuilders" do it for women so you cant just put it down to the class. at the end of the day each person has their own idea on how they want their body to look. and just because you do mens physique doesnt mean you arnt allowed to train legs.

Yes you are right, was too quick to assume they'd all be ordinary beach kids :pfft: I just heard 'bodybuilding' show and 'legs not judged', no over all symmetry considered....well they ain't natty and they probably do train legs from what I hear between you and Doc Squatty

Slightly off topic. It would be foolish to assume that this is a natural class. This assumption may be a popular one for the uneducated.

its a good class for people who want to stay natural and i know a few guys personally who placed VERY well at auckland champs and are 100% clean. obviously other competitors will be enhanced as their is no ruling against it. its funny tho because the criteria doesnt want too much muscle or the hard/grainy look
