So for all you garage trainers who also lack a squat rack, how do you safely work with heavy weight?

In a recent workout I was pretty fatigued, upped the weight with a couple of 5s and lost my grip bringing the bar from the low to high position and strained/pulled something in the forearm. Even if I'd made it through the set I'm not sure how easily I would have unloaded at the end anyway.

Training massive overhead press and grip strength would make things a bit safer but I can't see how one can feel comfortable working near failure with no get-out-of-jail card.
